Son’s school has an annual choir banquet that is almost as big a deal as prom. Lots of the boys just wear their choir tux - son wore his the first two years, with a different tie. Son loved it last spring that he owned a suit to wear. It seems that if everyone in the group has a school issued tux, it’s a lot cooler to wear your own suit than a school tux.

Bumping an old thread for sport coat humor. On Easter, I realized my 16-year-old son had grown out of my husband’s coat size so he could no longer wear hubby’s #2 navy blazer. I wanted son to have a decent navy blazer with little investment (he might still grow) so I found two (both listed as “worn once”) that I liked on ebay, bid a bit on both, and actually won both - good bargain prices. (One to be left at home and one to take to college?) One is a Nordstrom’s navy blazer with nice dark subtle buttons. The other is a classic navy sport coat with nice gold buttons. Both are really nice.

Talked son into trying them on tonight, and they both looked great - and there were two shrink-wrapped condoms in the handkerchief pocket of the navy sport coat. He said “Why are there condoms in the pocket?” and I said “No, it must be one of those packets they put in boxes of new shoes” - I didn’t have my reading glasses on and at first they looked like those little dessicant packs to me.

This is bound to be a joke on me for years to come - the day I gave my 10th grader condoms - expired condoms, no less (exp 2/2008).

Hmmm, what do I put in my ebay feedback?

LOL - that one will live on forever!!!

Thanks MidwestMom2Kids_

for the laugh! :)

That’s a hoot.

BTW, as the OP, I can report that S has indeed worn that classic navy blazer at college!

Welll the OP was
I guess Midwestmom has the answer, that it’s better to be “safe” than sorry.

Too funny. Thanks for sharing. Anyone else remember the episode of Everyone loves Raymond where his dad gave out condoms for Halloween when he found a glass bowl of them individually wrapped in bright colors above Ray’s fridge?

Our S (& all the males in his HS graduating class) had to wear a blue blazer for his graduation over grey slacks. He purchased the outfit from the designated company but it never fit properly, even after altered by the dressmaker/tailor.

At least after alterations, it looked like it belonged to him, but it was pretty pricey for something he has no interest in wearing (& doesn’t look very good on him because the line was all off because so much had to be taken in, tho they purchased him the smallest size).

We discovered accidentally that the suit he fits best is the one H wore back when he was in college! He’s reluctantly added it to his wardrobe (it’s navy & has a matching vest). He still makes some noises about buying a suit, and he may still do this, perhaps while over the summer, while my friend is able to help him look around. He stopped growing a few years back & will be starting his full time job probably this fall.

Hilarious about the pocket and the condoms. Hilarious. Yes, I vote for a classic blue blazer. All my boys have them and S1 brought his to college with a pair of dress khakis, a pair of gray all season wool pants, a couple dress shirts and a couple ties. The blazer is all season wool so light enough to be OK for summer and yet heavy enough to be acceptable in winter. I think he wears the blazer with jeans for “socials” as I’ve seen pictures of him with blazer and jeans and polo shirt. S2 has the same wardrobe staples and will just bring them with him to college. If you don’t want to spend a ton of money Goodwill is a great place to grab blue blazers. When the boys were growing rapidly I found really nice Jos Bank, Brooks, etc. at Goodwill. When they outgrew them I’d bring them back and buy the next size up. I don’t “mind” the gold buttons as long as they aren’t cheap fakey plasticy looking. Every man/boy should have a classic navy blazer…they will go anywhere and are appropriate 99% of the time.

Chalk this up to another thing learned on CC - always check the pockets. ;)

Midwestmom, ROFL. I read your message while watching D at cheer and I couldn’t tell anyone what was so funny.

missypie, if you’re reading CC while “watching D at cheer” then you ought to have posted under http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/804933-you-know-youre-addicted-cc-when.html :)

Midwest - Soooo funny.

Last weekend I bought DS a retro black-and-white check blazer I discovered at Goodwill for $10.00. I am going right now to check the pockets before I give it to him.

Very funny story. Check the pockets before purchase and before going into the laundry!

My older son started wearing the blue blazer/tan pants combo at first communion, in second grade. Since then, he’s always had one that fits, so we now have a Perry Ellis dark navy in every size up to a boys’ 18. When my younger son grows out of one, I go down to the cedar closet and pull out the next size. Boys are certainly easier to dress!

I’ve had a terrible time finding a proper fitting blazer for my older 16 year old son - he’s very thin and if the jacket fits in the shoulders and sleeves, it can almost wrap twice around at the waist. Even Brooks Brothers said that they couldn’t alter a jacket well enough to have it fit properly. Is there a company that makes a good jacket for the typical, lanky teenage boy build?

Gourmetmom, try Banana Republic if you haven’t already.

We also found that Bloomingdales and Macys carried some lines that were already cut narrow through the body; I just can’t remember what they are right now! I’m thinking Hugo Boss Red, but I’m not sure. Our son still had to have the jackets altered, but the jackets were narrower to begin with.

^ Agree w/ oldfort about college life.

Hard to believe that your son will not need a blazer and/or a suit for various occasions as he matures. Also realize he will change sizes.

As I write, a blue blazer my H says he does not want anymore hangs near me for my S to try on. Rather than give it away, my S could use it. He has needed blazers, suits and or tuxes for formals, concerts, job interviews, jobs, funerals, weddings, church, etc.

Get a blazer!

Talbots had a kids department back when my boys were small. I knew they were having their big sale, the one where things are 40-60% off or better at mid-summer. Went in and found two really nice navy blazers. Didn’t have the boys with me, so I bought BOTH. I think they were $25/each, marked down from what? $99? This would have been 15 years ago or so. Great purchase … wore both of them for years between my two and then handed them down to my collection of nephews, all younger than my sons!
