I wouldn’t worry about looking bad, but I agree this sounds like he is maybe getting too caught up in the concept of it being an “honor”, or necessarily making college more challenging. In fact I have specifically heard on multiple occasions about Engineering students that enjoyed being in Honors for the perks, convenient study groups, and so on.
Again not obligatory, I just think it could be worth looking at details with an open mind.
