Does one bad class ruin your chances of getting into top schools?

  1. if your user name is your real name, change it!

  2. “ruin” is a big word. One B will not be the reason you don’t get into a highly selective school- but obviously it won’t help either. IF the class was so problematic that the highest grade in the class was a B, your GC should be willing to note that in their LoR. I suspect, however, that other students were able to manage an A, and this:

is problematic. If it means that you are used to your grades being pumped up by ticking the box, you are in for a jolt in college.

  1. if you have set your hopes and expectations on the famous names who reject 90-95% of their applicants you need to be thinking about what your “and” is: the students that I see getting into those schools have top stats- “and” something that sets them apart. Contrary to popular lore, it does not have to be a “national award” (those help b/c they are an easy way to recognize exceptional achievement), but it does have to be something.
