Dog bed suggestions!

We have a 28ish pound corgi-beagle. He is not rough with his stuff and he does always retire to his bed in the living room in the evening and is out for the night (sleeps much better than any of my children did!!)

Because his bed is in our main living area, I also want it to look decent. We have had this LLBean bed for 3 years and it looks like new. Has been through many washes (dog beds get smelly!) and the insert is still in good shape - I shake/fluff the bed every morning. Of course, we monogrammed his name on it   http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/83860?feat=134-CL1&page=premium-fleece-dog-bed-set-rectangular

The medium is plenty big for him to stretch out on.

While the cost is more, it has lasted like a champ. I had LLBean coupons to help me with the purchase so that helped but they also run an extra 10-20% off - especially this time of year.

I’m also shopping dog beds. I’d really like to put our pup’s crate away when we move to our smaller house so am thinking a bed with sides will be sort of a compromise. Knowing our own memory foam bed sleeps “hot”, I’m looking at a bed with a gel cooling pad. Does anyone have experience with one? My very fluffy Norwegian elkhound likes to sleep on the stone floors when it’s hot out and I think this was hard on his predecessor who was the same breed and had painful arthritis the last couple years of her life.

This one still looks like new after years of use, and has coverings that are machine washable. A little expensive compared to some, but highly recommended. So comfortable we were all tempted to sleep there ourselves!

Our dog has chewed up two dog beds but I’m hoping it was just because I moved it. She hadn’t touched it when it was in her sleeping room, aka laundry room. Anyway, a friend suggested getting one at TJ Maxx, Ross, etc. I’m going to look there for one of the above mentioned brands. I don’t think she made the connection between tearing up her bed = not having a bed… She’s been sleeping on old blankets for the last three weeks.

I have bought a few of the beds from TJ/Home Goods - for extra beds - one for at our cottage , one we keep upstairs in our room for thunderstorm nights…my dog doesn’t mess with his bed, but each one I have bought (while very cute and stylish!) are not hefty enough IMO for everyday sleeping unless you have a real lightweight! The inside cushion tend to be very basic. But, very stylish ones there!

Oh wow, this is not the kind of thing I’d spend money on. Our dog has a pillow / bed that was a hand-me-down from my parents’ dog. He got fleas earlier this year so I bought a $15 bed from Target while the first one was being cleaned. Most nights, he just sleeps at the foot of our bed anyway, not even needing a bed.

I’ll be honest. One of the reasons (not an important one, I’m aware of that!) we ended up getting a dog - our first pet ever - four years ago is that I love the look of an LLBean or Orvis or other “classic” dog bed as a home accessory in a casual living space. Call me crazy, but a good looking bed with an adorable dog on top - priceless home accessory! I do see it as a home accessory.

Now that we have our pup, call me crazy again, but like our family members I want him to have his own spot and be very, very comfortable there - pups have aches and pains too and deserve comfort!!!

Last crazy admit - our corgi/beagle is very lovable and at night when he goes to his bed he totally melts into me if I get down on the floor and cuddle him on his bed - tail on FULL loving wag! And I can feel that his bed is a bed made for a king - roomy and thick and comfy!

you made me laugh abasket (which I needed) as our D’s dog that seems to be a fairly long term guest simply loves to be tucked in at night. She has her cave bed and then a sweater as we turn down the heat and then later in the night, if too hot, moves to her ($34) ortho be with a lighter cotton quilt. She also loves a good hugging in the a.m. but f it nasty weather might not get up until 2.

Our dog had several Costco beds. After the cats took over one of them, we had to get our dog an extra one. The Costco beds lasted a while, and the price was unbeatable. The covers were removable and washable, and the cedar shavings filling kept them from getting stinky.

Dog bed = on top of my legs atop a king size posturepedic mattress

This one would die and have thought in heaven with that.

Yesterday we had a huge huge and huge unexpected thuderclap. Dog is freaked–this along with fireworks and hic ups
are her main issues in life.

So Off she runs to get under our bed ( normally the door is closed). OK fine. Hours later and Hours later…
She would not come out and seriously seemed stuck. I am thinking either H gets home in 8 hours or I call the fire Dept.
So I leave a trail of cheese and 40 minutes later she decided to go for it (not eaten at this 4 in the afternoon).

She does have two great beds as well as her emergency bomb shelter.

Getting a dog as a fashion accessory isn’t a good practice. Dogs should be companions…not trophy wives. Getting a Chihuahua so you can look like a Hollywood movie star, or getting a pit-bull so you can look like a tough guy…these are the dogs that get abandoned and end up in shelters.

Ok, one more confession about our dog and his bed. Last thing I do (in the winter) before going up to bed is to cover him up with a blanket - even though his bed is very near a heat radiator he seems to love the blanket - most times in the morning he’s still cuddled up in it!

Lizard, not sure what you mean by that. Our dog is FULLY our companion and while he does have rack of seasonal dog collars (he’s sporting his Green Bay Packers one right now…) and wears an Eddie Bauer hunter green sweater when it’s really cold for his walks, he is absolutely happy, content, spoiled and loved. We don’t fru-fru him but we treat him well - gets walked at least 3 times a day, played with in spurts all day long - we like to think he knows we are as loyal to him as he is to us. He is the 4th kid I said I would have! And BTW, we rescued him from a shelter.

Lol I’ll address a few other things later but just to clear some things up: my rescued pit lives like royalty. She gets homemade treats, has the run of the house including access to all beds and couches, and is the baby of the family and gets treated as such. She likes her on the ground bed for her crate, which she uses and we never force her to go in. She uses the ground bed to lay next to the heater and for when we go on trips.

I won’t buy a $100 bed because it’s not in my budget but I will get her something comfortable because she’s my baby.

Romani, if you have access to a Costco (or someone who can pick one up for you) I think they are a good source. I know many people outside of this thread that have purchased multiple Costco beds and swear by them. They are quite good size and are probably quite durable.

The Costco beds seem to be a great option- I would go with that. @abasket, I had to laugh about snuggling in the dog bed- our labs love that too!

Of course, right now they are lounging on the sofa, keeping an eye on things. I’m not home, but I’m pretty confident that’s their habit. And I completely agree- if your dog is part of family life and spends time in the main areas of the house, a bed that harmonizes with your decor is necessary!

Ok, I’m caught up on this thread- thank you everyone for your suggestions.

I do not have a Costco membership but I will ask around and see what I can find. I think I know some people who would be willing to help me out with that

Thank you everyone!

If you want to shop at Costco but aren’t a member, you can buy yourself a Costco gift card and use that at Costco… at least, that used to work.

Oh really? I didn’t know that. I will look into that.
