Being aggressive even without an actual bite, teeth or no teeth, is threatening. Sorry, but you should not need to go to great lengths to support such animals. What do we do with threatening humans? Prison. But society is not willing to spend money on animals to support them like we do humans. Children who bite need to learn not to or be separated from others.
There was a case here in Tampa that made the news media very recently where a family had two pit bulls- one nice and the other put down after an aggressive biting incident with the family. I do not see why they kept that dog as it needed to be kept separate and they had to be careful around it.
Tooth removal does not take away the emotion toll on anyone who is mouthed aggressively by a dog. Consider this- what would happen in the wild to a dog who did not behave? It likely would be banished and die.
I always carry pepper spray on my walks. The one time I forgot it I came across a stray pitbull that was very interested in my two dogs. Fortunately it was not aggressive, but I did have to carry my dogs home in a hurry. Now, I never forget the pepper spray.
We had to put down a biter we took in as a desperate rescue situation. I called all over our state and into the next to find a safe place for it, but everyone was afraid of the liability. We could have just had the shelter do it, but we thought that would be unnecessarily traumatic so we took it to a sympathetic vet in town who let H stay with it until the end.
It bit my D and she did not tell us right away because she was afraid we would get rid of it. My h still has a scar. I was terrified of what would happen to our kids or any of their friends who visited.
It is a sad memory but we felt we had done all we could and there was no other way. That dog was so traumatized I think tooth removal would have been just more trauma.
I honestly had never thought of that til I saw this thread. I think since she's getting old and if it's due to progressive anxiety from dementia and it's bad enough that I'm considering having all her teeth pulled I would probably go with euthanasia at this point. Pulling her teeth wouldn't lessen her anxiety. I don't know, I cried all day the day she turned unexpectedly aggressive because I was afraid I was going to have to make that decision. It's going to be painful when that time comes.
