Domestic Music Festivals and concern about Corona Virus

Interlochen shared this week that they will be announcing the summer festival plans on April 30. Their deposit and decision is due on May 1. I think they will follow BUTI and Brevard example and cancel.

Curious, what are your high school musicians plan to do this summer in case all on-campus festivals and camps are cancelled? What will they work on besides their remote instrument lessons? Online classes at local or community college? Working on their creative projects?

Thank you!

Kid just learned through the grapevine that Sewanee is getting cancelled as well. He’s college aged, so we are now trying to cobble together a lot of private lessons and (hopefully) he can find a summer job.

I know I’m two weeks behind in answering and you’ve already decided not to attend. I’d make any decision based on the importance of the activity and the history of my kids. My kids were both very healthy and rarely missed school for illness (or any other reason). But…their health histories were not good. My older D was a micropreemie and spent 8 weeks on a ventilator and then 3 more on O2. She did get respigam (IVs for 4-8 hours, for 5 months in the winter) to prevent RSV for 2 years. When she got bronchitis, it was really bad. My other daughter was born in China and spent 2.5 years in a cold and damp orphanage. When she gets sick, she gets really really sick. Flu, bronchitis really do her in.

So for my kids, I wouldn’t be sending them to camps or group living situations because this is a respiratory illness. If it were me back in my youth, I would have wanted to go, and I think my mother would have let me.

I think Colorado restaurants and hotels will be open in July, but I think most people will be doing outdoor things (not stadium sports) like playing tennis and hiking, but that most music events in Aspen and Vail will be cancelled or cut way back, and that big music festivals like the Jazz fest at Winter Park will be cancelled. U of Colorado is basically closed for the summer so no Shakespeare Festival (outdoor venue), no music or sports camps, no on campus classes.

I can’t help looking at the summer festival from another perspective - that of the instructors. I wonder how many will be pulling out of contracts. We certainly know some who have curtailed travel and appearances. There are many in the vulnerable age or underlying health categories that don’t need the money that may choose to forgo festival teaching - even if a handful of places decide to run their programs.

Got an email from Curtis today, regarding cancelation of the Mikael Eliasen Summer Voice Program :frowning:. I’m assuming their whole Summerfest is likely canceled. That’s 3/3 canceled for us. We understand why, of course, but it was to be a really amazing summer, so disappointed. Health and safety definitely prevails. With students and faculty coming from all areas, it probably wasn’t a great idea to hold them.

Music Academy of the West is remote learning for the summer.

So sad for all. This was one of my kids’ favorites. Great instruction, great conductors, terrific fellows and the beach!

Music Academy of the West says 4 weeks of remote learning, and I guess the next 4 or 5 is TBD…

Eastern Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival all cancelled this summer as well.

Castleman Quartet Program cancelled the NY program, today ?

Interlochen cancelled the summer course with the option of online course(half the tuition).

My daughter was to attend 3 programs, all back to back. Early june-late August. None have offered online options. In one way I’m happy bc I considered “would she sit in the house on a computer daily?” And the other part of me is so disappointed bc we planned for this summer to FULL of singing /connections and growth.
We have a few other factors going on and feel real uncertain leading into audition season. ( she is a Jr)
*SAT are canceled until Sept
*Lessons are Zoom
*New teacher while teacher of 8 yes is on maternity leave ( we love the new teacher as well)
*return to old teacher, keep consistency with new teacher?
STRESS!

So far the only music program not cancelled is the MasterWorks Festival in SC. They won’t make a decision until June 1st. Fingers crossed.

Aspen has cancelled.

Apparently, Curtis is opening up their Summer Fest online. Applications are due June 15. Session starts July 11 for a month

Kinhaven just cancelled. We were so hoping that they wouldn’t. Are there ANY in person summer programs at the advanced high school or college level that will run? Son is a very high level trumpeter, both classical and jazz.

He will continue weekly skype lessons with his teacher. Not interested in any other virtual program for him.

Walden School just cancelled.

This new online summer institute just popped up in my email from Bard Conservatory. It looks like there could be some great summer opportunities here - week long courses by master professors - including the Bard Vocal Program. https://www.bard.edu/conservatory/vsp/

"The Bard Conservatory Virtual Summer Institute offers one- and two-week sessions from July 6 to 31, 2020. Led by Bard Conservatory’s world-renowned faculty, with course offerings in strings, piano, woodwinds, music theory and aural skills, and vocal arts, the Virtual Summer Institute provides musicians with the tools to bring their music-making to the next level. Most courses meet daily for two hours. For complete details about individual courses, please review the course listings below. Open to advanced high school and college-level musicians; qualified adults are also welcome to participate. "

They even have a course on Acoustic Ecology (auditors welcome.)
“People around the globe have noticed their sound worlds shifting during this era of COVID-19: birds are louder, traffic is quieter, voices join pots and pans for 7 PM thank-yous. Pianist, composer, and electronic artist Ryan McCullough offers a course in acoustic ecology, guiding students as they explore their own soundscapes in this time of sonic change. Students will explore field recording and sound editing techniques, with daily exercises emphasizing creative listening over technical wizardry. Students must have access to a computer and some device with a microphone (including cell phones or laptops), and while it is not obligatory to have an external recording device, instruction will also be available to those students with more advanced equipment. The sound editing software used in this course is free to use and runs on all major operating systems.”

(Pricing seems very reasonable for these offerings.)

@SpiritManager , that sounds fascinating!

Thank you @SpiritManager We will check this out. My kid is getting restless. It would be good for him to attend some online classes.
