"Well, she IS British.

Perhaps they have a different standard? I mean, all brits look the same to me."

Maybe she is a 10 in Britain, and a 4 in California.

"Well, she IS British.

Perhaps they have a different standard? I mean, all brits look the same to me."

Maybe she is a 10 in Britain, and a 4 in California.

A UK 10 is a US 6, I think. I’m talking about dress sizes. :)

She could look like Heidi klum, but her attitude is just awful.

So I was curious about the UK thing, I sent this article to friends and family in the UK via facebook(my mom is half British and we’ve traveled back and forth so I’m facebook friends with a LOT of British family and friends).

Consensus: no, not pretty.

Youdontsay, it wasn’t catty of you to say that Andie MacDowell can’t act. She can’t! Michelle Pfeiffer, while not one of the world’s greatest actresses, is much, much better than Andie MacDowell.

When Andie was in the Greystoke movie with Christopher Lambert in 1984, she looked utterly luminous, but her speaking voice was dubbed by Glenn Close!

In Dangerous Liaisons, a very classy film, Pfeiffer was cast along with Uma Thurman – two beautiful women who were able to do an eminently decent job with their acting.

I’m a little surprised at the negativity here.

“Some women do take looks into account while making friends and some women DO resent pretty women simply because they are pretty.”

Yes. But any pretty woman who hasn’t found less shallow women to be friends with by the age of 41 is doing something wrong. The author is not living in a freshman dorm with fellow teenagers any more. If she’s looking forward to all the women who will suddenly want to be friends with her when she has gray hair and wrinkles, I think she’s in for a long wait.

Actresses and models, whose careers are shaped in part by their looks, have good reason to be focused on this sort of thing in their 40s. Ordinary citizens like the author just need to get over themselves.

Have known women like her. Heck, have a few like her in my family tree. Average looking but utterly convinced they are Hellen of Troy. It’s just weird. Nothing shakes them from that delusion. Nothing. They seem to connect with guys who go with the delusion.

Then there are the truly physically beautiful people we have all known who are completely unaware of their beauty . . .

Speaking (or posting) of looks, is anyone else sick of the super duper plumped out lips on everyone these days?

^ You mean duck lips?

I don’t get it. Then again, I really don’t “get” make up or things like that.

I hope the article is some weird kind of put-on because it would be sad for any 41-year-old woman to be convinced that her exceptional beauty kept other women from being friends with her, whether she is indeed beautiful or not. Sad that this particular woman is so deluded, and sad too that she thinks so little of other women.

(And - I like Andie MacDowell. I know her career didn’t get off to the most flying start with Tarzan, but I think she was fine in Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral.)

If her (modest IMO) level of beauty is such a burden for her and she is so eagerly looking forward to old age so she won’t have to continue to suffer so much under the weight of her looks, there’s no need to wait. There is plenty she could do (or not do) to shed her beauty right now. For example:

Quit using any make-up. Wreck your complexion with harsh soaps and avoid all moisturizers. “Style” your hair yourself using sheep shears and a hand mirror. Take up smoking. Get a big tattoo in the middle of your face. Put on about 40 pounds. Ditch the nice clothes and replace them with thrift shop rejects. And so on…

Do all this and your looks will be shot in no time. Problem solved. Easy.

Some people do not photograph well. I just met one of my D’s best friends whom I’d only seen on FB as an average-looking young woman, and was immediately taken by her beauty! It does not come across in photos. I guess some people are only beautiful in 3 dimensions.

I’m still surprised at the negativity here.

Lol, coureur!

AllThisIsNewToMe…more like Valerie Bertinelli. Not blonde. Not tall.

Oh, and now I look just like a movie star in my military ID photo: Kathy Bates in Misery. You would all laugh. The gate guards cringe every time I drive on post.

bethie, really? To me, it’s like poking fun at kids who come on here and agonize over deciding whether to go to Harvard or Princeton. Really? That’s what’s keeping you up at night? #first-world problem

Very strange article. She is pleasant looking, but not at all beautiful. I think that the minimum requirement for beauty is interesting bone structure (like Angelina Jolie).

I agree that very attractive women can be burdened by unwanted attention from men, but I think that even the most beautiful women around can have rewarding friendships with other women.

BethiVt===really…you can’t find humor in this sort of narcissistic silliness?

Yes really. I think this is just what this woman is talking about.

The comments about her husband were uncalled for and mean.
