Door to Door Donation Solicitors - What do you do?

That was incredibly rude of them! I understand not wanting to open the door to politicians after that experience. Worst part? They were friends.

Well…they were friends before they slammed the door. Not close friends. Thank goodness.

In our small town, the folks running for office are easily recognizable by most people. They are very visible at public events and the like. They do go door to door to meet all of their constituents…because it’s a small town.

But in a larger city, I’m not sure I would be opening my doors.

I live in a small town (population 6500) with required 1.5 acre zoning—we don’t have sidewalks and many people have long driveways, so it is rare that someone comes to my door. Usually we get Mormons and kids collecting signatures or soliciting donations for various nonprofits/causes. I open the door and will almost always be holding a small labradoodle who is barking and squirming! That cuts the conversation short.

Most of the town organizations will set up tables at central places in town (transfer station, post office, or local general store) to get their message out or to sell/fundraise. There seems to be a consensus that this is a better way to reach people. Political candidates do that as well—both folks running for local and state offices—national not so much.
As a young person, I was very much an idealist and canvassed for candidates. I would not do that today—times have changed. ( I did canvass for Obama but that was the first time in over 20 years!!)
