Dorm move in woes...

My resident assistant my freshman year back in 1970 had a great dorm move-in story. At my university the RAs helped the freshmen move in. A cute guy RA helped her with her suitcases. Two years later she was an RA and they were still a couple. They both got their Ph.D.s at the same university, and are still there teaching and running a division of the college together. And they are together all because of dorm move-in day.

Bookiemom - how sweet! When we were at orientation there were two presenters that were husband and wife, and both of them had been there when I was there 30 years ago.

Martina99 - I packed tools and my H and S asked why … they were used several times during the move-in. I don’t have an ex, but my H wisely removed himself to the student center for coffee while we were unpacking, otherwise one of us would have thrown the other one out the window.

LINY mom - maybe your roommate was on “maternity leave.” In the past, girls sometimes didn’t come back to college because they were pregnant and placing the children for adoption - families told people they transferred, got jobs, got married, etc. I was one of these children. I had a sorority sister who unexpectly transferred to another university after Christmas break and returned for the fall semester and I’ve always wondered if that was the case …

I once sent a box to my S and it sat in his dorm mail center for three weeks. He kept going and checking each day looking for it. We thought it was lost in the mail.

It wasn’t lost in the mail. It was lost in the mailroom. Even after asking each day, nobody in the mailroom thought to maybe look around. Oops!

Kind of an urgent thing, too - he had to go out and buy another one of the item sent (thankfully not a computer).

This doesn’t officially qualify as a move-in story, but it sure involves a LOT of moving from May through Jan/Feb.

When we went up for S’s graduation in May, D casually mentioned that she pretty near all her clothes were in need of washing, but couldn’t she just store them & wash them when she got back in the fall? That was unanimously vetoed by H, me & S (who would be sharing storage space with her). We spent a lovely night in Santa Barbara doing laundry after a nice dinner so that we could leave for the road trip with both kids knowing that D’s clothing wouldn’t be smelling things up in our absence. hmmm, the things we do! We also spent several days of the “vacation” moving – D moved her stuff to S’s apartment. We all moved their stuff to the storage facility. When we got back from the road trip, we moved stuff from the storage facility to S’s place where he’d be living for a few weeks until D’s apartment was ready. S then moved all the stuff into her apartment by himself. He has proceeded to sell the things he could part with & store the remaining things neatly in D’s apartment until we have our next road trip in Jan/Feb, to drive across country from LA, so he can start his job on the East Coast!
