Dorm packing: "Everything but the kitchen sink" or "Why would I take that?"

^^^ Agree with this - as far as the roommate goes. And if parents can’t accompany the student and only one car can go. You don’t want to pay shipping costs. Just seems like some of the responses are more based on what parents think students need or how they should live. That’s what I’m trying to understand.

Many kids don’t realize just how small the dorm rooms are. Fitting all your stuff in one half (or less!) of the space you had in your room at home is not practical. If the reason for taking less is to be respectful of your roommate and not overcrowding the room with your own stuff, I think that’s very thoughtful. But definitely, kids should take whatever will make their tiny dorm room feel warm and cozy. I’m guessing many parents have either had those experiences themselves (room so full you can’t find anything) or they’ve seen it with another child.

Also true that one dorm room is not like every other. We visited some colleges where the room was indeed a little “cell” with a window! Maybe because my 3 all landed at smaller privates - while they didn’t have rooms fit for a king or queen, they often were roomier than some that we saw while on visits.

Less is more. EXCEPT when it comes to bedding (sans extra sheets, never used). I bulked up my kids’ paper thin mattresses with extra cushiony mattress pads and covers.

Used: cleaning supplies (one thing - lysol multi-use or something similar) and a couple of sponges; simple tools, extra socks, underwear, extra pillow cases, small mini-vac, shower caddy.

Never used: sewing kit, extra sheets, anything clothing related that is duplicative (for eg, one fleece jacket, not 2), extra storage bowls and silverware (one set of each is fine), extra rags for said cleaning supplies, drying rack (for clothes not going in the dryer… they just put them over chairs), way too many extras of toiletries and bandaids, first aid stuff, extra pens/pencils/notebooks - they wanted stuff from the bookstore. Many more I just can’'t think of off the top of my head.

One thing I didn’t pack that my S came home with… condoms (gulp)

We and our kids are all different. Our S and D took different approaches. S has always been more of a minimalist and likes things very neat. D is much more of an acquirer. Fortunately, since S was on campus 3 terms prior to D, he could give her things so she didn’t have to buy as much. They could also store things together.

Each, on their own learned that when its time to move, having too much “stuff,” means more to schlepp and or toss. I figure we help them with the initial move to campus. After that, they’ve helped each other, recruited friends and otherwise just got it done.

Minor crisis. I went to pick up the 4’x8’ U-Haul trailer that @Consolation suggested, but there’s a short in our car’s electrical box. That means we can’t hook up the trailer lights so we CAN’T USE THE TRAILER!! We could have rented a truck, but we would have to rent it round-trip and it would have been more than $300. So we will borrow a shell for the top of the car, and use our platform that fits on the back. We will look like the Beverly Hillbillies! Too bad I can’t post a photo here!

Oh man, Maine! It will all be fine - a good story to tell later!!
