I also encourage parents to host your child’s friends if you are able to do so. Even though D’s dorm was open she brought a friend to our home for Thanksgiving last year and we all really enjoyed being able to share our holiday. She knows that we are happy to do this again.

Our school has a couple of specific dorms that are open over breaks. They have an additional fee. If kids know they won’t be traveling home (often the case for international students) or if they are working, they choose those dorms.

princeton dorms were open over all breaks, including christmas break. I’m not sure if anyone stayed, but you could access your dorms. Plus it gave flexibility on either end of the breaks. Dining halls were closed though, for all of the breaks. Not such a problem as there were still other places on campus to eat.

the schools my kids attended/attending did closed the dorms only for summer and winter breaks ( international students were allowed to stay over winter break at least at one of the schools )
