Hey guys - I’m a first year at U of C this year and I live in the Shoreland which I absolutely LOVE. Honestly, my first choice was Max last year because (1) it really is quite close to the main quad, (2) the rooms are nice, new, etc.

That said, I think the Shoreland is great for many reasons too… yes, it may be farther away, but there are buses (cta and u of c run) that come right up to the building. They run every 10 minutes in the morning, 15-30 minutes in the afternoon, and then every 10 minutes during the dinner hours. After then, the evening buses (5 routes) run every 30 minutes (two of them come to the shoreland).

Other than that, the rooms are amazingly large; as a first year, I have a quad (shared with three other first years) that has: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen. The rest of the rooms are a mix of triples (with a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom), doubles (with private bathroom), other quads, and a few singles. And the size of the rooms make hosting parties quite easy =) yes, there are u of c students who party… But if you want to study, just close your door, and it’ll be fine.

In addition to all that, the 6 (bus) is just two blocks away (this is probably the easiest way to get downtown) plus the 55, a line that goes to the red line, green line, and midway airport and that the Shoreland is the dorm that is the closest to most Hyde Park restaurants and “attractions” (honestly, the neighborhood isn’t that interesting) puts the city at your feeet. Some of the kids I know who live in Snell-Hitchcock or Max don’t really even leave their little bubble on campus, which is a shame considering how much there is to explore.

So, yeah, that’s just my two cents. If you can get through that jumble (sorry, my brain shut down after finals) I think there are definite benefits to living in the Shoreland. And if anyone has questions…just ask!
