double major in film and computer science

If I were to go to UCSB and double major in film and comp science, would that be a good match? After I graduate would I be able to get a job in comp science while also trying to pursue my film career? Or do any jobs involve both of those majors?

There are some CS jobs in the film industry, such as those in computer animation and the like, although most CS jobs will be in various other industries. You may want to take the graphics course in your CS electives.

Computer animation is the obvious overlap, but there a great many jobs in the film industry that are now heavily computerized. Special effects, compositing, sound editing, etc.

A more salient concern is whether you can complete this particular double major. Films and CS are both known for being particularly demanding of your time outside class. You may want to consider doing CS now and doing film as an extracurricular club activity, then getting a film MFA later.

Tufts is a long way from California, but this interdisciplinary Multimedia Arts Minor has been very popular. UCSB probably has some of the same course offerings. You can analyse this Tufts program, then see if there is a way to re-create it in the context of your UCSB curriculum. As ucbalumnus suggests, you want to skew your CS electives toward graphics/multimedia/game design/user interface design and possibly get some exposure to music/sound. You can also google around and see if any other schools have interdisciplinary programs that span the disciplines that you can get ideas from. As dreamschl suggests, its probably better to prioritize the CS stuff at the UG level then augment the arts stuff that you couldn’t get to with courses at the graduate level. Club activity, internships and/or work experience will help you hone in on the area you are most interested in and you can then adjust your academic focus to match the requirements of your specific area of interest.

Good luck, it is a fun and interesting field.
