She has olive-toned skin, thanks to her dad’s Italian heritage. I’m not sure what she will do as far as make-up or a spray tan. I know she is dragging her feet picking something (she also had a baby 5 weeks ago).
I sent her these links that I thought were pretty (not sure the shade of yellow is “bride approved). She also doesn’t want to spend a ton on a one-and-done dress.
I like the second one. My DIL let her 3 gals pick something in dark green. One girl from Chicago wore a velvet dress, another from the south wore a light fabric. All were knee length.
I don’t understand how the bride to be could pick the color yellow that rarely does anybody any good. It it’s probably too late, but I wish the other bridesmaids had all said fine with the green, but no yellow for us.
I preordered the pleated matte midi skirt from Quince and it arrived today. It was a bit longer than I expected ( a few inches above my ankles, I expected mid calf. I’m 5’ 7”). The fabric is a bit thinner than I expected but it will work as a year round basic. I can wear it this summer with a tank top and in the fall with a sweater or turtleneck.
I like the 2nd dress as well, but so much depends on how it looks on your D and the bride’s approval.
My D got her bridesmaid dress from mail order, Azazie. She and other bridesmaids ordered several styles in a color bride chose in around their size and they tried it on and then ordered the real dresses. D got hers made with D’s measurements (I measured D). The dress fit D pretty well and we only paid to have it hemmed. Azazie contributed toward alterations of hemming. The process went much better than when we did it with a different vendor my niece chose when D was in that wedding party.
My niece-in-law is also using Azizie for her wedding attendants.
Very nice! My favorite style. It is too bad that they use models who are 5’ 10” or taller! I learned that hemming a finely pleated skirt properly is very, very expensive!
That throws me off too. I feel like a lot of “regular” sized clothes are designed for taller women. I often order things in a petite size even though I am not technically petite, in order to get the length I want without having to pay to get it altered. Alterations have gotten expensive! My daughter just paid $24 to have a waist taken in!
I also notice that in many of the brands I like, the petite sizes often sell out quickly.
On the other side of the coin, I can buy a dress that’s midi-length on a model and have it be long enough on me to pass for formal attire at a wedding without having to deal with a gown that drags on the ground (I don’t do high heels).
Has anyone done Rent The Runway? I’ve been browsing but I’m hesitant - worried that what I pick won’t end up fitting the way I want, and it will be too close to the event to pivot to something else.
My D uses Rent The Runway but she is 5’10” and thin; not much looks bad on her! She reads the reviews carefully, and always has a back up dress in her closet just in case.
If you are someone that can wear an item off the rack without altering, it could be a nice alternative. I don’t think I could as it is rare that a dress doesn’t need hemming, taken in, or shoulders raised when I buy.
I looked at Rent the Runway for an upcoming wedding - the prices were very similar to dresses I was considering buying so didn’t want to go there.
Plus (as you noted!) the short window that you have to rent it (before an event) would make me nervous - if it didn’t work out, would need an alternate in short order.
Ha, you’d think that would indicate to the marketing team that it’s a good business. What petite brands do you like? I’m at a point in my life where I don’t need more clothes, but it would be good to trade out some of the non-ideal fitting items for petite alternatives.
I was with some friends and we were talking about our absolute favorite piece of clothing in our closet. In this discussion it was what would you grab from your closet if you were evacuating.
For me it’s this sweater. I’ve got it on today. I’ve brought it on European vacations, camping trips and I’ll war it with leggings, slacks and anything in between. The color is perfect for me. https://www.jennikayne.com/products/everyday-sweater-taupe?variant=40515739877549 I bought it on sale but I’d pay full price if I needed to replace it.
What is your favorite piece if you have one?
I’d let my closet burn. That would incentivize me to do some serious shopping! I have so many things in my closet that bring me joy it would be hard to pick one. I’d probably grab my Barbel coat I’ve had for eternity and washed so many times I can’t even remember! Best outerwear ever.
