Dressing Young (Part 1)

I detest pantyhose - too confining around the waist (if I had to wear them I make cuts all around the top in an effort to make them more comfortable). I did find some very comfortable microfiber tights last year that I wear with boots.

I need to look into the stocking and garter thing. I forget about those. There are definitely times when it’s too cold to go bare legged and my ultra pale legs can look a little silly in the dead of winter. I need to be more consistent with the self-tanners but it always feels like too much work.

I have a camelhair coat that I love that was my grandmothers- however it is bit worn on the cuffs & haven’t taken it in to get it restyled. ( which I think could be done, since she was larger than I- it reminds me of when she would buy me camels hair coats when I was in grade school & I wanted to wear a ski jacket)

I wear a peacoat with cashmere ( from Lands End that was bought for D1- but it was huge on her, so I inherited it- they run * really* big even the petites)
but that is the longest wool coat I wear regularly. ( I have another wool coat that I love- but I bought it when I was much heavier, an LL bean leaf green duffle- which I also have to get taken in)

I received the Jcrew catalog too, however, I started henna’ing my hair again, & the one disadvantage is that it is harder to find colors that go ( although my favorites are foresty colors like greens/browns anyway- but some purples look really good)

But I also got the Boden catalog, & I absolutely love their fall stuff. It is a bit of an ego depressant to order English sizing, but the hard part will be deciding what not to order.
[& they now have petites! Boden USA](http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Clothing.html#nav)

Boden now has US sizing.

I never venture outside my house wearing shorts.
When I go to the gym, I go straight there, wearing baggy shorts (not the Lycra kind).
I just feel like, once you hit 40+, your legs just aren’t that good.
But I am not overweight; I have no varicose veins – is it just me?
Or does everyone on this thread agree – shorts ‘out in public’ are the province of the young?

Hey – if you’ve got it, shake it!

I wear “walking shorts”. I do not see wearing these shorts being any different than wearing a skirt or a dress that hits a couple of inches above the knee. My legs are fine, but I do not like my knees (H says there is nothing wrong with them, but I disagree).

I don’t wear shorts in NYC, but I wear them in my town. :)

Mostly though I wear capris or skirts if I am in any danger of needing to look presentable.

I wear J. Crew bermudas all the time here in suburban Silicon Valley.

I wear skorts on weekends for shopping around the neighborhood & family events. Don’t wear shorts too often but prefer them over bermudas or capris. I actually prefer nearly anything to those two, but we’re all different. I don’t wear skirts or dresses too often, mostly wear long slacks. Am starting to wear dresses again, now that I bought two I really like recently. Will see how long the trend continues. It’s tough to find dresses I really like and fit well and are classics these days.

For travel, I stick with slacks because I can’t handle temps below 70 in anything else & never know what to expect except usually colder than HI. :)

Try these brands:
GANT
Polo
La Martina (very expensive)
Hugo Boss

Well, here I go again with my Garnet Hill fixation. Regarding shorts, I find I do best in the wider legged linen drawstring types. They are actually fairly “short” shorts but the wider leg openings make my legs look better than more form fitting bermudas. Managed a little bit of tan this summer plus the Nars tinted lotion applied liberally and I have enjoyed wearing shorts more than recent past summers.

Here’s a really good one from Garnet Hill - have it in two colors:

[Relaxed Linen Drawstring Shorts - Garnet Hill](http://www.garnethill.com/relaxed-linen-drawstring-shorts/womens-fashion/pants-shorts/shorts/204947)

I used to be obsessed with skorts and then my DD gently informed me that I looked too preppy and golfy. I do have one skort I refuse to give up from Title 9. It’s just brilliantly comfortable . . .

I wear shorts. Linen shorts from J Jill and chino shorts from J Crew. I rarely wear a dress or skirt.

My favorite shorts have much the same dimensions as sewhappy’s linen shorts, but due to my weight loss I really need to replace them. They have a drawstring, but no elastic and they’ve gotten so I can pull them off without unbuttoning them. I like the look of linen, but fear they would look horribly wrinkled way too soon and I am not fond of ironing either.

Different topic -

In my search for make-up for the wedding, I did some experimenting and one inexpensive item was great:

[Signature Club A by Adrienne New Big 7 Wondercover Camouflage & Makeup at HSN.com](http://beauty.hsn.com/signature-club-a-by-adrienne-new-big-7-wondercover-camouflage-makeup_p-6420512_xp.aspx?webm_id=0&web_id=6420512&sf=bs&attr=147&ocm=bs|147&prev=hp!147&ccm=bs|147)

This is a great cover-up wheel. The undereye blue and the yellow for reddish marks were very good. I have a scar on the side of my nose where skin cancer was removed and it did a great job of covering it up.

I also went to Sephora and bought HD finishing powder to set my make-up as well as their foundation. The few pics that were taken of me looked fine except for those dreaded neck shots. If only I had remembered to keep my chin up. Oh, my. If any of you have read Nora Ephron’s “I Hate My Neck” you will understand.

Anyway - high marks to this color wheel thing.

Also changing the subject, I have a question: if you were going to buy a suit today (skirt and jacket), how long would you want the skirt? I found a beautiful suit at the Sak’s outlet yesterday and on a whim, bought it. I originally just wanted the jacket as it was super soft and cozy. Then I noticed the skirt and it seemed a shame to break up the set. It was a great deal but I don’t really need it. I’ll likely wear the pieces separately but have no real suit occasions in my life these days. The whole thing fits like it was made for me but the skirt is oddly long - just covering my knees. It’s kind of flattering but I haven’t worn anything that long in quite awhile. Is this a current trend or hopelessly out of fashion? (It’s made by Theory, if that’s any help.) Should I hem it a few inches?

Oh, and the jacket has what the saleswoman called “bracelet length” sleeves. Again, it seems a little odd but it makes it look kind of sporty and is very comfortable. I also really like this funny seam on the side of the skirt that curves back over my hips. I’m not describing this very well but the whole thing just has some nice details and the fabric is really soft. Should I keep it?

Puzzled: I love Theory skirts, pants and jackets! Does your skirt look like it is a “midi”? If so, I’d keep the hemline intact, because from what I’ve read, midi is a very much “in” trend in today’s fashion (some folks say it is hard to pull off):

[midi skirt](http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/167211)

and

[another one](<a href=“Victoria’s Secret: The World’s Most Famous Bras, Panties, Lingerie, Sportswear, Swimsuits, Beauty and Accessories”>Victoria’s Secret: The World’s Most Famous Bras, Panties, Lingerie, Sportswear, Swimsuits, Beauty and Accessories)

At 5’ 6", I’m too short for designer stuff. I hem pants, but I do not mess with the skirts, so minis become just above the knee, and knee-length skirts become midis. :)

I ran upstairs and measured the skirt and then tried it on again. It is exactly 25 inches long and I’m 5’5". It hits me just exactly at the bottom of my knee. So I’m not sure if that’s a midi or not. It’s a smidge shorter than either of your examples and neither tight nor pleated. It would be a basic pencil skirt except for the interesting side seam which runs right up the middle of my leg then curves back and joins the waistband about 5 inches in from the side.

Is Theory considered designer stuff? All I know is that it’s very soft and comfortable. And you will perhaps appreciate that together they were marked down by over $400!

Great find! Neiman puts Theory on their “contemporary designer” list. In CC terms, it is tier 2, while HYP (“premiere designers”, such as Hermes, Prada, YSL etc.) are tier 1, :)

Does its length look like this:

[Theory - Pencil Skirt - Neiman Marcus](http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod63651027&parentId=cat10240737&masterId=cat7660735&index=17&cmCat=cat000000cat000001cat000009cat000059cat000069cat7660735cat10240737)

If you like it, wear it as is. Skirt lengths are all over the place nowadays!

It’s a nice, clean, classic look and should look great for many, many years. It looks a lot like the skirts I have for my suits; very versatile! Thanks for the visual, BB!

Wow, BB, you’re good. That’s almost exactly my skirt except that the seams go toward the back at the top instead of the bottom. And the fabric is a little more nubby I think. I guess with your approval, I’ll keep it. Thanks so much.

BB, are you thinking of becoming a fashion consultant? I think the Nordie Theory skirt is much more classic that the two you sent previously. I guess it’s because I favor skirts like that & have several of them in my wardrobe. They look great with blazers & present a very professional image. Hubby loves them on me as well. I’ve had them in different fabrics & textures–nubby can make it more interesting than smooth, but I have both types.
