I like the Mad Men clothes too, but my needs are unfortunately much more casual.
I went to REI yesterday & bought three dresses! ( but hey, I can’t even remember the last time I went to a Nordstrom sale) :)

I am bumping this thread cause I need boot suggestions, I have black riding boots that I like but H doesn’t, so I am looking for something still knee high but maybe a little softer looking.

Sorry, alh, I’m not familiar with that line.

EK: what kind of boots are you looking for? Flat, wedge, high heel? That dress is really cute and opens up a whole bunch of opportunities for boot pairing. :)

I got the grey print & I definitely have to wear a camisole under it- but it is really comfortable & since I am actually a petite, it hit my knee not above it.

sewhappy, my experiences with Athleta have all been good, FWIW. I like the dress! Let me see if I can find the last dress I ordered from the site.

ETA: Nope; it was a summer dress last year. I have also purchased a swim suit and found it to be a good organization.

sewhappy, that is a great casual dress! Although I have not purchased anything from Athleta recently, my past buys were great.

Ek, I like the boots a lot. Don’t be afraid of the higher heel - wedge heels have a different feel and are much more comfortable for urban navigation (you will appreciate the fact that hey do not get stuck in every little crack and hole on our downtown streets!).

I missed the bus and ended up wandering through the mothership Bon, aka Macy’s. The displays are still littered with shapless, cheaply made crap, but there were some some things that made me pause and check them out. I walked out with 2 slinky CK dresses for the price of one! I loved the printed fabric which looked like toned down version of some wild Cavalli paterns.

A longtime lurker but I don’t think I’ve ever posted on this thread…can’t believe its been silent for a week–I always learn something new here! So, here’s my question although it’s more a ‘fashion’ question rather than a ‘dressing young’ one:

I have a diamond drop that I love and wear it most days unless my outfit cries for a different (bigger/colored, etc.) one. I’m not great with jewelry so I leave this necklace on for days at a time and frequently forget to put on earrings. I’m trying to change that but am not really sure what goes with a diamond drop during the day. I do have diamond studs but that seems too matchy-matchy. I have pearls which are fine but I have several sets of earwires with a combination of silver and gold or small jews/crystals or beads but don’t know if I can wear such casual earrings with not-such-a-casual necklace.

I prefer to emphasize either the earring or the necklace. So if I have on a beautiful diamond drop necklace, I am likely to wear studs (but not necessarily diamonds - maybe like simple gold or silver balls). If I have on ‘look at me earrings’ like chandeliers I will wear a much simpler necklace or no necklace at all. I know a lot of women who like to wear matching earrings and necklaces but that’s never appealed to me. On me, it feels too ‘busy’.

I also have and usually wear a diamond necklace in a very modern ball/bezel setting. The setting is platinum and the chain is gold. I often wear smallish chunky gold or silver hoops with it. Matching is my worst dressing old habit - I’m just a naturally matchy matchy person. So I confess that I do have earrings that basically match the necklace too.

I don’t like to mix metals, so if the necklace is set in yellow gold, I would pair it with any clean-lined gold earrings. The earrings you posted would look great.

If the diamond is round, you could also wear it with gold earrings with a colored round stone, but if the necklace is modern, I would make sure that any other jewelry is equally modern.

How would the necklace look layered with a couple of other necklaces of varying lengths? Since it is your “everyday” necklace and people who see you often expect you to always wear it, it has become your signature piece, and as such, you have a lot of leeway in how you wear it.

Slightly off topic - but it does have to do with jewelry…

A short time ago a family friend for whom I serve as a surrogate daughter of sorts gave me a gorgeous diamond and aquamarine cocktail ring. Now, I am just not a cocktail ring kind of gal. I would rarely wear something like that. So, I gathered up my courage and asked her how she would feel if I turned it into an enhancer. She wasn’t sure what I meant, but said by all means use it however you wish.

I worked with a jeweler and the piece is stunning. I use it with a simple omega necklace and wear it with dressy outfits, but also with a white blouse and nice jeans. The best part was how happy my friend was when she saw it.

So - if anyone inherits Aunt Bessie’s collection of rings - they make great enhancers.

Looking for ideas on what to wear to a high school reunion–haven’t seen these folks in 40 years. The event isn’t formal. In fact, the dinner is in an Italian restaurant (owned by a classmate). Definitely not upscale (I grew up in a working-class suburb in large midwestern city). I don’t want to wear slacks, but can’t figure out what kind of dress/skirt/top to wear instead. I’d love ideas, links to outfits, etc. ($200 blouse is OK too.) The event is at the end of October.
