Dressing Young (Part 1)

I’m not a huge fan of Issa either. Not sure what it is, perhaps it is intended for young women. For casual, I love the Boden “stuff”, too, I was just cruising their new fall catalog last night.

Alumother, since I have not heard from you, I suspect that you probably did not get my email about the somewhat abrupt change in our plans. :frowning: Sorry. Those darn H and their unpredictable business plans.

Ek - great dress! Love the colors. Did you have any luck finding boots to go with it?

Issa makes great solid color dresses, like this one:

Im not worrying about boots yet, I wore it barelegged with some born wedges, but I think I will try the garnet hill boots.

Ek, I really like the Garnet Hill boots. Made in Italy and reasonably priced - I’m very tempted to order a pair, too. :)

I sent you an email. I’m a forgetterhead AND a message misser? Yikes!

Trying to place my first Boden order. Shopping cart is at $2000 and must edit it down to budget.

Ordered from Boden for the first time this year. I liked the two tops that I bought, but I was disappointed at how long it took for the clothes to arrive. I didn’t do expedited shipping and I think I waited just over 2 weeks for the order. Is that common?

Posting this from blackberry as no power and no computer. I went to the bloomies sale the other day and bought 2 Three Dots tees and a foldover skirt. Nice comfy stuff. My DD absconded with the skirt. Also got Eileen Fisher linin cropped cargos in twine at 1/3 price. I am becoming more devoted to Bloomies than Nordies.

Sewhappy, are you shopping from your blackberry? ;)

Alumother, no, you are fine. It is BB who messed up. I think I sent the email to someone else. Oops. I was running like a chicken with it’s head cut off on Friday trying to make sure we would not be charged for things we would not be using. So we are looking at October. It should be nice in Silicon Valley, shouldn’t it?

I bought a dress at Antropologie - size 10. No wonder it went on sale. A size 6 person would not even think about trying it on, and a size 10 person would not fit in it. I eyeballed the dress for a few minutes before taking it to the dressing room. It fit! Now my wardrobe has dresses ranging in sizes from 0 to 10 :p

BB - Yes, October should be great. And this time, if you find you’ve got time, I will put it on my calendar so I do not forget what day it is! My memory is really dreadful. I look at my mother, at 79 with terrible memory loss, and I shake my head and realize I may follow her path and I am only wondering what to do about it…

*Ek, I really like the Garnet Hill boots. Made in Italy and reasonably priced - I’m very tempted to order a pair, too. *

The only thing is: suede & Seattle don’t really go well together. I expect our current stretch of dry weather to end soon.

Bite your tongue, EK! We deserve at least another month of nice weather in our neck of the woods. I haven’t even worn all my summer clothes yet.

Big online shopping news: Nordstrom is now offering free shipping and returns!

So glad I stopped in. I follow y’all quite a bit for ideas. My taste is rather conservative but I like to get ideas from you. I saw the link to the Garnet Hill Patagonia dress and didn’t even hesitate for a moment! LOVED it! It will be so comfortable with leggings and black boots. I have zero fashion ability. A couple of LBD’s, skinny jeans with white shirts and vests. Comfort fits. I’ve been eyeing an Eileen Fisher tunic from Garnet Hill to go with leggings but can’t decide if it will hide my size 12 frame or just make me look dowdy. At $178 it is way over budget, although no one in this house would ever question my purchasing habits. ;)

Thoughts? It looks so cute on the model with capri leggings. Such an easy weekday outfit.

Blue Iguana^^, I have that tunic and wear it all the time. Very flattering, very versatile, washes well (hang dry) and a good 3 season piece. I have worn it with jeans, cords, dressier pants, and leggings, too. Not dowdy at all, IMO. Just needs a little interest/color in the way of a scarf or funky necklace. Go for it-- worth it!!

OK I’m just going to throw it out there: I’m uncomfortable wearing leggings at my age (55) and size (12)…If I wore that eileen fisher tunic with leggings out in public, I’d pray nobody I knew saw me! Maybe I’ve got the wrong leggings? Maybe my backside is just too broad? Maybe I have a hangup?

Do others feel this way?

Leggings under the Patagonia dress or tights?? Are the two so similar that they are interchangeable? For those of you who ARE comfortable wearing such things, more power to you. Very often you look great, but I’ve got to ask: What’s your secret trick?

@ masslou - FWIW, these are my favorite leggings (only to be worn when my backside is well covered from every possible bending angle!!). They are kind of a cross between a legging and a tight. I’m 5’6" and after washing the regular length is more of a capri, whereas the tall hits at my ankle.

[Finesse Legging | Athleta](Athleta)

Just like masslou, I’m not sure about leggings/tunics. I’m size 6 (+/- 2 sizes :)) and not 50 yet, but I would feel uncomfortable in the outfit pictured in blueiguana’s link. That said, Eileen Fisher’s silk jersey fabric is to die for, and the tunic outfit looks great on the model (would never look that great on me!).

Here is the size 10 Anthropologie dress I was talking about earlier:

[Mompos Dress - Anthropologie.com](http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=20935003&navAction=jump&navCount=#BVRRWidgetID)

The reviewers say it fits tue to size, and the rest of the clothes I tried on at that store were all size S or 2-4. Hmmmm… Maybe the dress I got was mislabeled, but the take home message is that online shopping for unfamiliar stuff could be tricky.

Internet is back! BB, I would have shopped via my blackberry except it get’s very tiresome sitting out in the driveway charging the phone in my car.

Anyway, I figured out why the Issa dress with little leaves can’t work for me - I think the print scattered along the hemline needs a little bit of length and that means some height and I’m too darn short. Am really interested in getting a solid color Issa though.

Alumother – my mom was always vague and people were telling her she was getting the big A back in her 50s and she is exactly the same at 86 – a bit vague here and there but sharp as a tack on everything that matters, and has a wit that just keeps getting sharper with age. If you’ve noticed my spelling, I also tend to get vague . . . but the brain is always working, just not big on the details.

Okay, I think the topic of leggings for our age is really a good one. I have also tried to to work thru this challenge and not very successfully. A catalog came to me recently called Pure and I spied these cotton stretchy slim pants and thought they might just fill the bill:

[Cashmere clothing from the leading cashmere company Pure Collection](http://www.us.purecollection.com/.Ankle-Length-Trousers_LW-244.htm)

Thanks for the input on the Eileen Fisher tunic momoschki & BunsenBurner. It’s good to hear from someone who actually has it. I’ll give it a try. If I’m not happy with the look with leggings I’m sure I’ll be happy with dark rinse jeans and ballet flats. I’ll be sure to pair it with a fun scarf or necklace as well.

For people who want to try the tunic look but are afraid that leggings are just a bit revealing, consider searching for the right jeggings or skinny jeans in a very dark wash (indigo/black). They could zip or pullon and provide more structure than leggings. Don’t forget the spanx if the look is a near miss for you otherwise.

I like this look for casual wear, but it requires a flattering top and a leggings or jeggings that are not prone to bagging out. It helps that my height is in my legs because even at 5’ 7"+ a lot of tunics are too long or full to be flattering. As usual, it is all about proportion. I am getting clearer about looks that I will just avoid. There are very few of us who can successfully pull off every fashion option.
