Dressing Young (Part 1)

I think you’ll find today’s fashion boots very comfortable. The back zippers are great. My D has a really hard time finding shoes that are comfortable and her boots, from Johnston & Murphy, are her most comfortable shoes. She lives in them in winter. Almost every shoe slips on her heels.

Roshke, thanks for sharing the link on boots in the workplace. At least it’s good to know I’m not the only one with boot anxiety!

The Weitzman’s look very supple, almost like leather leggings. I could see myself wearing them.

I was just down in the town of Princeton and took note of the women walking Nassau. I admit the tall boots with leggings and the form fitting coat that hits about mid-thigh is really adorable. Is it a look that works on a 50-something woman though?

SH. You bet it works on us.

Sewhappy - ^^^^^^ I hope so, because I am sixty and still doing tall boots, skirt, tights and mid-thigh coat.

Unlike you, Sewhappy, I have a very positive memory of high boots. There was a time when I did runway modeling and restaurant “live” modeling for a department store. I thought I was so cool with my white go-go boots, wool shorts, sometimes a poor boy cap, etc. The other week I saw an old pic of me with a sort of riding-type hat, thigh length military looking coat and boots - oh, my! To be that young again.

Just to be clear - I still do the boots, but my skirts are longer (a bit above the knee) and I long since ditched the caps & riding helmet-like hats. Although, come to think of it, I do still wear hats.

On the subject of boots, I have a pair of riding boots like these

and would like to wear them with jeans. My straight leg jeans bunch up and don’t work with the boots. I’m thinking perhaps I need skinny jeans to make the look work. Any suggestions about where to start my search? FYI, I’m not skinny–a curvy size 10–but I’d still like to try the look. Leggings scare me but think I can convince myself to wear them with skinny jeans.

JCrew matchstick jeans fit a little closer in the calf than straight leg, so they might work for you.

There was a time when I did runway modeling and restaurant “live” modeling for a department store.

Wow! Very, very impressed.

Emerald, I am a huge fan of J Crew matchstick jeans. I buy them several sizes up though. Had to get over the shock of my usual size being way too tight.

Love my J Crew toothpick jeans. They can be worn easily with boots. I go a size up. I have matchstick cords that are a tiny bit wider in the leg.
My suggestion if you want to try skinny jeans on the cheap head to Old Navy this week. They are having the skinny jean on sale. I thrived them on as a joke while shopping with a girlfriend and was shocked they looked good and were comfortable. Think I went up two or three sizes.

I’m a big fan of JCrew matchstick and toothpick jeans but you have to try on several sizes as they go by waist, are snug, and know that they will stretch about one size. I’m 5’6" and wear a short in the matchstick (31" inseam, regular is 33"), and I consider myself to have fairly long legs. On the flip side, their regular pants have total vanity sizing.

I bought these “boot straps” last year, I think at Bed Bath & Beyond but here they are on Amazon: [Amazon.com: Hollywood Boot Straps Fashion Smooth Tucked-in Look One Size Fits Most: Beauty](http://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Straps-Fashion-Smooth-Tucked/dp/B004LS4QPM). They are velcro straps that you wrap around your ankles to keep pants from riding up when you wear them tucked into boots. You could probably go into a fabric store and buy velcro and create your own. Anyway, they work great and I wear them all the time.

Actually, I checked and it’s the toothpick J Crew jeans that work for me. The matchstick are wider in the leg and not as flattering for me.

Re: pants with boots – thinking a thicker legging can be good with a tunic length top.

sewhappy - don’t be impressed. I was NOT someone you would have noticed. I was just a skinny girl who happened to walk by the person in charge of the models when she was hiring.

^ I am still impressed. I was skinny but awkward and wore very thick glasses and was usually clumping around miserably in my boots. :)

Wondering if anyone has shopped the JCrew Factory online store…I’m seeing some good deals on their today that I’m tempted to try for gifts…

Tempted to try and find some of the skinny matchstick/toothpick type jeans/cords you all have talked about but unsure on sizing…I figured I would order at least a size up but not sure if I want to take the chance.

Has anyone ordered from the Factory store???

I have ordered many times from their factory store but overwhelmingly for my boys (shirts, chinos, sweaters). I don’t have any experience with their women’s pants. They don’t call them matchstick/toothpick on their site, they have other names for their styles but I’m assuming the fit is comparable.

J. Crew Factory is lower quality in my experience.

Yes, D & I have gone to the outlet, and the clothes are lower quality although the price drops IMO arent enough to compensate for that.
Probably better off getting stuff from the regular store on sale, because I think even the regular JCrew lines vary in quality.

I agree that the quality can vary and regular prices are still high. When their redline prices go 40% off I check for things for the boys. They wear the worn in chinos and on sale they were $26. They have a good variety of shirts in slim which are great for two of them. Again, on sale around $25.

I got a bunch of stuff (for myself) at JCrew near me Thanksgiving weekend. Cardholders got 30% off (they advertised 25% off but special email said 30%). I thought that was a great deal. I wish I had been shopping in PA with no sales tax, though. I don’t go up much (if at all) in the matchstick/toothpick. I wear 2 in the regular pants and 26 or 27 in the stick/pick.

I looked at those ankle straps for jeans and decided to save a few bucks - I just tuck my jeans into socks when I wear skinny jeans with boots. Just like MOfWC, I do not have to go up in size when I buy those J Crew jeans (size 2 and 26-27). Maybe it is a runners thing?

Checked out the designer sale at Nordies and decided that nothing really was worth the prices. My DVF blouse is still full price…
