My latest fashion dilemma: When I wear a long tunic with skinny jeans or leggings, the tunic sticks out from underneath my jacket and I hate that look! Weather’s not cold enough for a longer coat–my leather jacket is the perfect weight, but the tunic sticking out several inches is not a flattering look for me. I see the look on younger women and I still am not a fan! Is it just me or do others agree?
I wear short jackets with longer tops underneath all the time, but top needs to be straight. I like that look on me.
Most of the time, it is not a good look, IMO. If the top is straight and somwhat fitted and is paired with a cropped jacket, I like that look. A shirttail or bottom of a blazer sticking from under a pea coat looks messy.
This is what I meant:

EEK!
That pic is hilarious! Never thought about it being a problem for the guys - and that definitely does not look good!. I think a crisp white shirt with a cropped jacket on top can look good, as can a denim jacket with something longer underneath. Generally, it only works if the pieces are put together on purpose and the proportions are just right.
My husband and I are cracking up over the flood water pants and as my husband called the shirt, the “man skirt” hanging out the too small jacket. Eek is right. If it’s “fashion forward” then it’s lacking in class for sure.
I think the question was really aimed at the outerwear coat over the tunic. I do agree that a cute cropped stylish jacket can work over a long tunic. But I don’t like a barn jacket (I know that’s dated) or some other outerwear jacket over the tunic
The man looks ridiculous! This I think is more the issue, no? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/a7/f3/f7/a7f3f7ac1f370b7b824dbea5225cb567.jpg or this: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/06/fb/10/06fb10b49b57e9c8560899117c08e89d.jpg
I can’t get my head around it either which is why I bought a whole bunch of longer cardigans last year.
More of a problem than short sweaters over long shirts is so many young ladies who should not be wearing leggings…at all…due to body proportions to put it kindly and wearing them to the office. My mind just whispers “avert the eyes.”
I often like the long-over-short look, especially when the layers are assymetrical, as with a lot of Helmut Lang looks in recent years. As in, leggings with an assymetrical-hemmed tunic, with a shorter moto-jacket, for example, worn with ankle boots. It is a look that works well on me.
It can definitely be a cute look on the right body type. I have a friend my age who also carries that off really well.
I think it’s better for taller ladies.
Personally, when I wear a long top, I try to find a nice jacket that looks good over it. I think you have to have more fashion confidence than I do to carry off a short jacket over a long top and leggings. I have some nice long jackets and scarves that work well for long tops and jeggings/leggings/tights.
I don’t find short jacket over long top so much an issue as the pervasive use of short tops with leggings that I saw on a recent campus visit. That should just not be a thing.
I’ve grown into the short-jacket-over-longer-shirt look. It might be because I love my new leather jacket and want to wear it.
Re #8349, yesterday I saw a woman wearing leggings that were practically see through because they were stretched too thin and a short shirt – and the outline of her thong underwear. Yuck.
Yes, I was referring to outerwear. Wearing a long tunic sweater with skinny jeans or with leggings and wearing a short pea coat, for example…Just looks weird to me. Maybe I’m just not getting it!
No, I think you are getting it right - what you describe is not a good look. There is a reason some outerwear brands make their popular trenches and coats in 3 different lengths.
I like ponchos and wraps. It looks put together, yet casual. And l think long tunics sticking out is part of the aesthetic.
Much cheaper versions at Costco:

I love a poncho - such an easy way to bring a pair of jeans up a notch. I see a lot of them lately. For a while they were out and now I have moved them back to the front of my closet.
