In my home state, one is allowed to get a learner’s permit at age 14. The only restriction placed upon a driver with a permit is that he or she must drive with a licensed driver over the age of 18. After six months of driving with the permit, one can take the actual license test. Yes, this means that 14.5 year old eighth-graders drive to middle school. There are no restrictions on driver’s licenses for those under 18.

If one lives on a farm, one can get a license to drive tractors/farm machinery at age 12.
