Duggars in the news.

Another good piece by the same author VeryHappy linked (in posts #233 & #237): http://www.patheos.com/blogs/lovejoyfeminism/2015/05/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-josh-duggar-police-report.html

Thanks for that article. I don’t know how anyone reading those details can continue to claim with a straight face that the way the Duggars “handled” the situation was acceptable.

Hm, I wonder if a case can be made that forcing your children to continue to live under the same roof as their abuser is not only child endangerment (which would be an easy case to make) but child abuse.

When I worked for a domestic violence shelter, women would have their children taken away and charged with child endangerment all the time because they (the women) were in an abusive situation- even if no one ever laid a hand on the kid.

If so, I wonder if the statute of limitations has run out on that… I’m not sure when he moved out of the house.

In what states is spanking reportable?

You know I don’t support the half assed way this was handled. But let’s be careful what’s assumption vs what we know.

And what the H is this Patheos blog?

In which states is spanking not reportable?

I also am wondering about this plague.
When is it coming to my town, and how much are tickets?
I hadn’t heard about the events at Syracuse/Brown, so I googled, and it apparently had to do with Syracuse retiring the # of Jim Brown.
Not the scandal I was expecting.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say statements in this thread are “anti-Christian,” but there does seem to be more than a smidge of scadenfreude involved.

I asked about spanking because you said a therapist would have to report. First info I see said its not against any state law. Thought someone may know more.

I did not say any would, I said that mine would, because she told me so.
It is legal in most states, including Washington as long as administered with an open hand & doesn’t cause injury.
But perhaps my therapist thought I would benefit by talking to CPS, IDK.

Jonri, I see little indication that anyone here is experiencing pleasure at the misfortunes of this family, rather I hear them saying they are more concerned about the girls than the parents seem to be.
Although speaking for myself, I do hold out hope that the show will be canceled and they will all soon vanish from the public eye.

Not Jim Brown.

Alfonsia, that’s just a link to the main index of what appears to be an anti-Quiverfull, anti-Duggar message board. Is there something in particular you’re trying to draw people’s attention to?

Sorry, I haven’t ever seen find the pro quiverful index LOL. Do you have a particular nuance that has been thus overlooked? That there are only victims in this sad TV beatified all American Family? You had me at sad. Oh, and TV.

What?? You’ve entirely lost me. You mean you intended to post what you posted? If so, what’s your point? That there are websites devoted to criticizing the Quiverfull movement? That’s not exactly a surprise!

Sorry, so is there a PRO “quiverfull” website? That would be the best balance, for sure. I would be fascinated by that.

Nor is it especially reputable.

Really, no sites are going to be reputable LOL, we are spouting opinion based drivel. If this (general) story links Duggars, Gothard, Hobby lobby, politicians, etc to the bigger story of exploitation of children and women, we get to have a conversation without being stultified by pro christian gags, then so be it, even if the start of the conversation is some trivia from a rag/oprah/daily mail etc there is NO downside.

I’m not asking because of balance, for God’s sake. You miss my point entirely. If you had bothered to read this thread, you’d know that I’ve been as vociferous as anyone in criticizing the Duggars’ views. My point is that you’re putting a huge burden on people by linking to an entire website – essentially dumping it on us – and expecting us to go peruse it, instead of doing the work yourself to point out what’s supposedly worthwhile. (I suspect that you’re not even supposed to do that kind of thing.) All you’re accomplishing is to invite people just to play tit-for-tat and start linking to Dominionist websites and the like. In other words, it’s pointless.

Yes
Which is why mandatory reporting is a very very mixed thing.
Seriously, no one wins and after 42 years in the field am not convinced.

Someone [sorry; I don’t remember who] said that the Duggar girls who were abused by Josh will gain perspective and healing once they “gain distance from their family of origin.” Unfortunately, the way it works in the Duggar family, the girls never really leave their family of origin. They marry someone daddy-approved, have children every year, and basically become little Michelles. It’s not like our children, who gradually learn more independence, get to rebel (hopefully in safe ways, like dying their hair pink), live on campus, live in another city, and finally create their own nuclear family.

@Alfonsia thanks for sharing that link, there are some mean and hateful messages there, but also some very insightful posts.
