Duke Kunshan Class of 2028 RD

Hi! How do they like it there?

My daughter absolutely loves being in China. She’s been able to travel to different parts of the country during breaks and just came back from a week visiting South Korea. Shanghai is a 20 minute bullet train away. The cafeteria is not her favorite thing but the food around campus is plentiful and cheap. Her biggest regret is that COVID did not allow her to spend all 4 years on campus.

Hi, do you have any insight into the workload over there? Do they like the seven week quarter system? Thank you!

The classes are fast-paced, that’s very true. Classes are held Monday - Thursday. Fridays are typically free days but can also be used by classes for field trips. Examples of field trips would be a photography class viewing landscapes to photograph in Suzhou. The workload is average to heavy depending on the class and how easily you understand the material. This is not a university who uses a lot of scantron multiple choice tests but like most liberal arts colleges, one that looks to papers and short answers to determine if students understand the material. My daughter personally struggled with physics. She had only taken honors physics in high school and none of the AP Physics classes. The 7 weeks she took physics were probably the roughest of her time at DKU. The professor made himself available and she took advantage of every resource and she did pass with a B (but did so with very little sleep). That has not been the norm but I mention it because there can be classes like that. With the quarter system, you only take 2-3 classes at a time, so while intense - it is not overwhelming as you are able to focus on just those classes. From what I’ve heard, the humanities majors are not as intense as the sciences.
My daughter likes the quarter system. She enjoys being able to focus on just two classes at a time. And when it is a tough class, you can see the end coming sooner.
