I was asking my daughter if she would prefer an egg crate or memory foam mattress cover. Her eyes got wide, “You would buy me a memory foam? They are so expensive.” Well, anything for my little girl. But really, I remember my back going out so I was on Darvon my freshman year and had a piece of plywood stuck under the matress. So yeah, I’m thinking if I’m already paying all that for tuition I’d rather she be studying without being on painkillers. Strange things go into our decisions.

JC*: I agree. (Well, of course I agree; you agreed with me.) When my first went off to college four years ago, I obsessed over every little thing. (He thought I was nuts.) With the second one, who’s about to leave, I’m much more laid back. If he needs anything that he doesn’t have, he’ll either buy it or ask me to buy it and I’ll ship it.

With my older and with my younger, they’re not thinking about this stuff to nearly the same extent I am. (Understatement.) But with my younger, I’m willing to settle back and wait for him to be ready.

He might not be ready until he comes home next Thanksgiving. :)

Those eggcrate toppers are supposed to be extremely flammable. Some schools don’t allow them. Does anyone know of an alternative that is safer - i.e. fire resistant?

I know my fiberbed is. It’s just important to keep hot things away from your bed (ie, don’t leave a laptop on a bed, don’t leave a heater next to it, dont put the bed too close to a radiator, etc), and no open flame in the room, at all.

I’ve given my S these instructions for his bed:

D had an eggcrate for freshman year. Then her school banned them for the danger factor. Not only are they highly flammable, but they give off noxious fumes if they burn. A fireman posted that they are terrible to have for those reasons, and that is why many schools have banned them from the dorms.

Down mattress toppers are great–D got one after ditching the egg crate and S1 has one and loves it!
