Duplication of Lexus Keys

CT1417

The chips in the keys cannot be swapped out. Its not cell phone.

@artloversplus–Thank you!

You can cut that key and it can be easily programmed. I thought you had the key with lock/unlock on it…

I suggest going to Ace and ask first, since our response varies.

@gavealltocollege‌ —I will try Home Depot as I don’t think we have an Ace Hardware, but will conduct a local search first, as that would be a cheaper alternative. Either way, I have to do something before we end up with no key!

The lock/unlock transponder gizmos fell apart. We had one taped together with duct tape for a while but I was afraid the key would break off in the ignition. Thanks!

Seriously, we repair our Lexus and Toyota plastic key fob housings with superglue - no need to pay outrageous sums to dealers and no need to supply shady eBay outfits with your vehicle’s personal info. The trick is to do it as soon as you see that the plastic is about to crack. Even if the plastic part disintegrates while the key is in the ignition, the metal part protrudes far enough for you to be able to grab it and take the key out. Take a closer look at how the key is designed.

Back to the OP- We had a similar situation (but not on a luxury car, just on a little Mercury Sable). Tried the internet and the local locksmith. Both gave us keys (and charged us) and neither worked. Recently I was looking at our car insurance and realized that they added replacement key coverage. I didn’t ask for this, but it is now in our policy so check and see if it is in yours. And they specifically told me that using this didn’t count against you like a ticket or an accident does.

Thanks tjmom
I don’t think the insurance works for me because the keys were misplaced or lost, not damaged. The car was given to me by my dad before he died. At the time, no one think of getting all the keys, after his death, I have turned over my parents home but still cannot find the keys, I am sure they were there but don’t know where. We have the only master that we are using that makes me nerves.

@BunsenBurner‌ — we actually had the key break off in the ignition and had to find someone with a pair of pliers to pull it out! We have now moved well beyond the super glue repair stage and should just pay up to have a duplicate made before we lose the one key we still have.

I still have the metal key part that has fallen out of the fob/transponder thing. I wonder if someone could just attach that to a dummy casing and allow us to use it manually. A trip to an auto parts store might be a good place to start.

Thanks all!

Yikes, CT. I just realized that your car is a different make. Definitely worth asking your locksmith about re-using the metal part.

@artloversplus‌ I got a key made a Walmart for my ford expedition. I was in the same boat and thought I would have to go to the dealer. There are only some walmarts that offer this service. You have to call the auto repair dept. It only cost me about 75 bucks.

Thanks

Just received the transponder key in the mail from the vendors on ebay. Programming is not a problem. Works well. Problem resolved. Cost: $40… I could pay for $20 more with a Lexus Logo on the key. Oh well.

I did not get the key with remote, that will run in to the 100’s/
