What is the level of hatred towards Duke??

celeste-apparently UNC holds to a higher in state percentage that is legislated. OOS population includes recruited athletes AND international students so it would have a wide profile but of those “simply” students, in on academic merit outside of recruited athletics or URM status, OOS would be your strongest population.

Rivalry, not hatred. Duke is a very different school. Not a state school so broader, more uniform population.

Duke is approx.89% OOS. Many would say that the level of animosity from the UNC students is huge.

dowzwerw, if UNC is allowed 18% OOS freshmen and ends up with 16.6%, is that significantly lower? I figured in an era of rapidly increasing piles of applications year after year, that they may be worried about accuracy of predicting how the numbers will shake out, since they have to pay a fine if they go over OOS even a bit. Thought that was just erring on the side of caution. Probably most of the administration and professors would love to have more OOS kids, judging from what I’ve read. Or is it intentional?

[The Daily Tar Heel :: NC A&T exceeds out-of-state student cap](http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2013/01/nc-at-exceeds-out-of-state-student-cap)

This article says the year before the 16.6% UNC-Chapel Hill exceeded the cap and had to pay a fine over $150,000.

celeste-I think that article actually supports what I am saying. 1: they were fined for having FEWER OOS, for exceeding the out of state cap. and 2: It is the university system’s Board of Governors, not the legislature, setting IS percentages. Am I misunderstanding?

I think they were fined in 2011 for having too many OOS which would mean exceeding the out of state cap. Am I reading that right? Then in 2012 they were slightly under the cap.

I was accepted OOS, but haven’t heard from UNC about scholarships, yet.

Is it safe to say that if I haven’t heard from them by now, that I won’t be considered for merit-scholarships at UNC?

Since I’m OOS, I haven’t received my acceptance letter yet, though I was notified on the UNC portal that I was, in fact, accepted. Perhaps being OOS could be reason for delay?

@EricJS - my son was accepted, but hasn’t received the acceptance in the mail yet. I can’t speak to the scholarship issue, but wanted to assure you that the portal decision is accurate. The USPS will eventually provide you with tangible proof. Best of luck to you!
