Early Termination Fee with roommate, what would you do?

First of all, I would ask him to forward the email from HR that says that they will only pay 1/2 of the termination fee. Hard to believe that they are monitoring this situation this closely.

When we were transferred and when our kids started jobs, we were given lump sums for moving incidentals. Maybe the company changed their minds.

Why not call him a liar and be done with it?

Years ago, I had an employee who was part of an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect. For this reason, whenever we ordered a departmental birthday cake, we did so from a bakery that satisfied his dietary needs. After some time, his rabbi told him he should demand to see the receipt, to make sure we weren’t lying to him. Maybe some people would find this acceptable. I certainly didn’t.

Since the lease is being broken because of his actions, I feel ethically you owe him nothing. Your name is on the lease so legally you owe somewhere between $1,600 and $800 depending on the language of the lease. I would pay the $300. The reasons are he is a friend and you are coming out ahead.
