I would ask his current teachers and see what courses they might recommend. Do they feel he is ready for Calc B/C or Physics C? If so then it would be a benefit. If not he may be better in Calc A/B where he would get a good introduction to college level Calc 1. Physic A wouldn’t be as useful as it would be Algebra based Physics. It might be a stronger introduction to the concepts but not what he will be learning in Engineering Physics. I think he should take the courses which will prepare him the most academically. That may not be the most advanced courses the HS offers.
He will be able to get into some very good engineering programs though the top programs will find him competing against those with higher grades and the most rigorous courses. The schools he might find best for him may not be the big names in engineering but they will definitely make him a good engineer if he is successful in their program. You can apply anywhere so long as your expectations are realistic and your choice is affordable. There are a number of engineering programs that are very good but affordable. Good luck.
