Ebola diagnosed in Dallas

^^^Yeah, I doubt it will be the honeymoon destination of choice, but what is the harm in restricting travel both ways?

It’s going to take a big effort on the part of the world community to get this under control. It is to our benefit to nip this out break.

Now, what are these “soldiers” actually doing? I have no idea.

If a proposed regulation provides no value, I am against it.

They are discussing this on CNN and are saying there will absolutely be no flight restrictions from these areas.

I’m keeping an eye on these developments in light of the fact that my borough has the largest Liberian community in the US and there is always a lot of movement back and forth. My D student taught in a school with a huge Liberian population. Glad she’s not there right now.

I’m worried about those 5 kids. If any of those kids have Ebola then I think the odds will go up that this thing will spread.

I don’t understand why there wouldn’t be flight restrictions. Is there that much indispensable trade between the U. S. and Liberia and the other countries that the economy would be hit. Airline stocks dropped today, CNBC said because of the Ebola fears. There are going to be more economic fallout from allowing people from Ebola countries in that in denying travel visas to the U. S. to people who come from those countries.

I’m moving toward thinking that there should be flight restrictions from countries with Ebola. I also don’t see any good reason not to do that.

106 Me either. People are already wondering if the airplane they are boarding flew to Libetia recently. All this secrecy and business as usual routine will make people more fearful.

I am guessing that a lot of the parents of kids who go to those 5 schools will be keeping their kids home for at least a couple of days. I know I would.

People get angry when public officials withhold information that they need. Which flight did he take, for example? Why withhold that information? The people who live in the same apartment complex as this man’s family are angry that they weren’t told earlier. The Liberian community of Dallas are angry they weren’t told.

As for the intake person not telling the others in the hospital that the man came from Liberia, yes that’s bad, but the doctors and other staff can’t recognize a West African accent? One would think they’d ask about whether the man had recently come from West Africa on hearing the accent.

I still haven’t heard anything about why they gave him antibiotics other than to make him go away.

And what about the kids that are being kept isolated at home and their fearful parents? Why does the government think its more important to let potential carriers of Ebola into this country than to safeguard those kids?

I read that this man had contact with a dying woman, Ebola victim, shortly before coming to the U. S.

Not interested in creating a political discussion here–genuinely interested in how others feel about this…

Am I the only one who thought Rick Perry’s involvement at the press conference was unnecessary? Do Texans find comfort in his reassurance that they will contain the disease? Wouldn’t it have been better to have just heard from public health officials?

Well the governor does run the state so if there is an emergency of any sort, you should hear from the one in charge. I think tons of people should be in the loop, not “just” medical personnel. Now why the soldiers were sent to Liberia I’m not sure, but I sure hope they brought protection and tons of medicine and saline with them. Anyone see that movie Contagion? The one with where Gwenyth Paltrow was patient 0? I don’t know enough about infectious disease to know the likelihood of something like this mutating or developing or whatever the word is to become more contagious.

My grandmother had to go through Ellis Island when she came to the US. Seems to me that isn’t that bad of an idea to quarantine people coming from infectious areas before letting them loose here.

The reason given that there would be no travel restrictions from that area was that it would cause “major disruptions.” I don’t understand that.

I would really like to respond to your question about the confidence I have in Rick Perry’s forays into public health. But I cannot. So the only answer I can give you to your questions are 1)no 2)no from my own personal perspective and 3)yes.

My mom brought up Ellis Island last night.

Yes, as a Texan I’m glad that our governor is involved and proactive in this issue. This is a very serious issue and I’d be worried if he wasn’t involved.

Just heard on CNBC, the guy traveled part of the way on United Airlines. Their stock is down.

I’m not necessarily a Rick Perry fan, but if Ebola appears in CA, I would want Gov. Brown to say something about the state’s plans.

I also don’t see that restricting travel to/from those West African countries to health-related workers would be that disruptive to international commerce.
