Eclipse at high school

Where is your school? If it is in or near totality I’d keep my student home. It’s a shame the school is doing that.

I agree with MomofJandL–if you are in the actual area of the total eclipse I’d just have my kid stay home.

Some things are actually worth witnessing.

89% here, first day of school. D18’s school is making a party out of it and providing eyewear. :D/

Most local districts delayed first day until next day. Districts that started today will release early on Monday. We are in area of totality. My D is teacher and that is workday but if they work over weekend they can not go in which S is planning since way to school is major highway and traffic is predicted to be heavy coming into the area

We at not in an area that is close to totality. We did just get an update from the school - adding 17 minutes to 3rd period and subtracting 17 minutes from 4th period, so no students have to go outside in between classes during the eclipse!

Okay, so I was wrong. The school districts in my state are not making changes because of lawyers and insurance companies: we have a many Navajo in our state: Navajo culture reveres the sun and shows great respect for the moon. Viewing the eclipse directly in taboo and is believed to bring poor health or bad fortune. One should be reverent during the eclipse and use the time for reflection, neither eat, sleep nor play. Out of respect for the Navajo culture, there have been adjustments in the schedule. Parents who want to view the eclipse are permitted to take their kids out of school, but the schools will not have viewing as part of the instruction.

@glido very interesting! My dh mentioned that his Indian (as in the Asian Country not Native People) coworkers mentioned that they could not eat during the eclipse beacause “bad/evil things” might come out during the eclipse and get into the food.

I wonder if other cultures have beliefs/customs specific to an eclipse?
