If you can find a good Volvo repair shop, the upkeep isn’t that bad - no worse than a Honda.

Consider a Honda CR-V.

A Winnebago?

Plenty of closet space! :)

Toyota Matrix. That’s what we bought for our son to use in LA.

I’m a college student, have a 1993 Toyota Celica hatchback, and LOVE it. The hatchback provides a ton of room, and I have transported everything from 2 armchairs to my boyfriend’s 6 foot long lacrosse stick with a box fan. The car was pretty cheap ($3500 two years ago) and runs great with barely any upkeep. It also gets around 24 mpg, which is pretty good for a 13 year old sports car. It’s also great for small college parking spaces. (I drove a minivan for a year before I got this car and cannot stress enough how difficult it was to parallel park.) Plus, it looks awesome. :-)

If new, I would look at a Honda Fit or Nissan Versa.

Volvos! I inherited a 1992 940, and it’s awesome. Lots of trunk space, very easy to maneuver and parallel park (I love rear wheel drive!), and pretty reliable.

Mine did break down once this summer, but at its age and with the number of miles it has on it, I would expect things to happen every once in a while. I definitely agree with taking it to a shop that really knows Volvos though - it took two tries for the shop that it got towed to (which was a combination Ford/Volvo/etc. dealership) to fix the problem, whereas our normal shop would have fixed it right the first time probably. It was a little costly, but it was sort of a big problem…and my parents rationalize that fixing it is cheaper than car payments, which has been the case so far.

Try a hybrid. You get tax breaks and savings on gas. The Toyota Prius is nice.

I would definitely not get an SUV, or anything below 30 mpg, solely based on gas. College students aren’t exactly able to throw around 60 bucks for a tank of gas.

.-_-.

I am in college and I have a Toyota corolla. I like it but I would LOVE a Yaris.
I think hatchbacks are better because they look cooler and have more room.

My picks…
Scion xB
Toyota Yaris
Honda Fit
Mazda3 HB
Nissan Versa
Suzuki Aerio HB (discontinued so you would have to buy used.)
