ED2 chances [3.8 UW, 1460 SAT, engineering]

Looking for opinions on chance for ED2
Engineering Major
1460 SAT (800 math, 660 English)
4.28 weighted
10 AP’s 9th-12th grade
Good EC’s but nothing spectacular
I think a pretty good open and honest personal statement
A’s in all math and physics classes in hs

What is your unweighted GPA?

What AP Stem classes have you taken or are currently taking? Scores? What is your approximate rank/or at least decile? Depending on weighting system and school, 4.28 could be middle of the pack or within the top10%. Rank in the context of your school is not as important as the transcript itself, but it does play a role.

If I calculated it correct it’s a 3.8

AP Physics1 and 2 A’s both years and a score of 4 and 5
AP Calculus AB A grade and score 5
Currently in AP Physics C and AP Calc BC
Other AP’s (APush, AP Lit, AP stats, AP English)
Rank is 15/310

That is great! You have a decent chance at ed2 admission, in my opinion

I agree that you have a chance. However, WUSTL is definitely not a safety, and with unweighted 3.8 probably also not a match.

You need to make sure that you have applied to at least one and preferably two safeties that you are happy with. Then relax, be patient, and just see what happens.

Also, I did not see any discussion of budget in this thread. Hopefully you have checked and either you and your parents are fine with being full pay, or you have run the NPC and are fine with the results.

Yes have a couple of safeties already back. Waiting on a few more. Willing to pay full price if accepted.

So to be very frank, I wonder why you have singled out WUSTL in particular for your ED II.

WUSTL does have a separate engineering school (McKelvey), but it still requires its engineering students to take courses in humanities and social sciences, and it generally has a very competitive student body in that sort of area.

For example, per its CDS, its 25th SAT ERW for enrolled students is 730, and only 3% scored under a 700 ERW (I would bet that was almost entirely hooked students of some sort). Something like 19% of WUSTL undergrads are in McKelvey, so necessarily the vast majority must have had a 700+ ERW (if they submitted, of course). There are similarly low percentages in an equivalent ACT reading or writing range.

And again according to their CDS, 67% had a 4.0. 24% had between a 3.75 and 3.99, and likely only a fraction of that 24% was a 3.8 or lower (again, I would bet that is mostly hooked applicants). I note you said you had all As in Math and Physics, which implies to me likely your not-as-good grades were in classes that would reinforce the impression your relatively low ERW might give.

Again, I think it pays to be blunt about this, so to me your numbers appear to be very low for WUSTL. I understand the 800 is very impressive in isolation, but it seems to me that WUSTL is maybe not the ideal target for someone who has that sort of focused rather than broader profile, not even in engineering.

That being said, I am not one to insist you need to ED II strategically. I just wonder how WUSTL in particular emerged for you.

Incidentally, to not just be a downer . . . your sort of profile is one that I think a lot of great public engineering colleges are happily looking for. Just in very crude terms, I think a lot of public engineering colleges generally ranked significantly higher by most engineers than McKelvey are going to have a lot enrollees with 600s SAT ERWs and good-but-not-the-best grades in non-STEM classes. And I think it is very possible your SAT Math and top grades in Math and Physics could get you way up that list, even out of state.

So that is part of what I am wondering about. Why bind yourself to McElvey when you likely have a better chance at some better-regarded public engineering colleges?

And I am not saying it is impossible to have a good answer to that question, but so far I don’t see an answer in what you have told us.

Thank you for your candidness. She loves the feel and vibe at washu. She has applied to some larger public state schools like OSU, Wisco, MiChigan, Maryland (all OOS for her). Her other non math and physics grades are 2B+’s and a B and the rest A’s for 9-12 grade so I wouldn’t say she isn’t on par with the students there. I do appreciate your feedback.

OK, then as long as she would prefer McKelvey to those public engineering colleges, and you can comfortably afford it, I see no harm in ED II at WUSTL.

But I would caution to have modest expectations about what ED II alone will do for her to persuade WUSTL to compromise on its normal numeric standards. So I wonder if there are other ways to show in her application she is actually really interested in Humanities and Social Sciences. This could be something done in activity selection, essays, and so on.

A’s in math and physics classes is a good sign for someone who wants to be an engineer. So is an 800 on the math part of the regular SAT test.

Of these four state schools, only Ohio State might qualify as a target for an engineering major who is applying oos with her stats . Unless she’s already been accepted at a safety she would be happy to attend, I’d add a few more targets.

Bro, I wish we could swap math and English SAT scores. I had a 740 in English and a 710 in math. But I’d say you definitely have a shot at getting into ED II at WUSL.

did she EDI somewhere else or just now decided to apply in the EDII round for WUSTL?

Accepted at OSU on 12/8
