FYI
I was in Costco in Staten Island (the most suburban part of NYC) today and there were no eggs. Zero.
I havenāt looked into them and thus I donāt eat egg alternatives. But if egg prices were to get out of hand, then Iāll find the healthiest non-egg alternative, because I eat a lot of eggs each week.
During our local Christmas shortage egg prices got up to $12.99/dozen and I walked away.
Kind of like milk from nuts.
Iām curious if thereās anyplace that compares eggs vs other options on price per calorie, price per gram of protein⦠Something where you could plug in a price and see how eggs compare to, say, chicken, tofu, āegg alternativesā, etc. I know egg prices are currently rising but Iām not sure how they compare to other options.
I went to Whole Foods this afternoon. No eggs. None at all. At any price!
Use the first of my 12 dollar a dozen eggs today to make brownies.
What Iām seeing and hearing from people is itās hit or miss. I hate the fact that if I really wanted eggs I might need to make multiple stops.
2 weeks ago, shopping on Friday morning, I had no problem buying eggs at the local Kroger-branded store. $4.99/dozen for āhappy chickenā eggs (supposedly range fed, and cage-free). Last Friday, same store in the afternoon, there were none available - very few of any kind of eggs. I did not check the price, as we donāt use a lot of eggs, but was surprised how empty the shelves were.
Eggs still seem a ābargainā for protein compared to meat prices.
Husband just reported another eggless Whole Foods.
This is just a suggestion for those who can. Shop for your eggs during the week, not Fri-Sunday. Most of the working world shops on the weekend so it makes sense that supply would be low at that time- unless you know that the one and only egg shipment your store gets is on Saturday!
I went to pay for my summer CSA today. They were offering a 5% discount plus either one of their wonderful pasta sauces, or a dozen eggs. There were NO eggs. They told me that they have sold 100 dozen eggs in the last four days. $6.99 a dozen.
No eggsā¦so I got puttanesca sauce which is delicious!
We have eggs hereā¦so we didnāt really need those anyway.
Around NYC Whole Foods still has eggs available online.
Yikes, $10 for generic eggs at QFC, though I paid less than half that last week at Whole Foods. Better check Whole Foods again. It was interesting to me that the case at QFC had quite a few eggs in there, like either theyād just fully stocked up or people were saying, āNopeā.
This article about Costco clothing ādupesā styled them perfectly. Forget about limited edition Chanel or Gucci⦠eggs are the hottest item.
I mainly shop at Wegmans. I was there yesterday and they had a lot of eggs. I only looked at the pricing of their brand large brown cage free eggs, because if you buy 2 dozen you get a discount. Last time I looked it was 2 dozen for $9 - yesterday $13.50.
Iām thinking that kids not familiar with the concept of supply/demand are seeing a good demonstration of it with eggs. Teachers will probably be using 2025 egg shortage for intro to economics discussions for a long time .
I ran to Trader Joeās this morning to grab stuff for dinner tonight and picked up their organic brown eggs for $4.49 (San Diego).
I agree. And another factor that will play into this is that eggs donāt last that long. If eggs at high prices sit on the shelves too long, as they near expiration date, theyāre going to have to lower the prices or theyāll have to throw them away. An economic lesson for sure.
