Most of the tip top students at my school are not big partiers, but they definitely don’t spend all weekend studying, nor do they look down on those who spend all their time partying. A lot of the students, who have low A averages with AP classes drink on the weekends. For the most part, it’s a matter of interest. The kids who don’t want to drink don’t. The kids who do, do.
Cigarette smoking is pretty much universally looked down upon at my school though. Most people find it to be disgusting. Occasional pot smoking is seen as okay, but pot heads are not very high in the ranks of “popularity.”
I don’t want to drink. I don’t like alcohol. My parents have been okay with me tasting their drinks since I can remember and I’ve never liked it. Sure, I’ll toast the New Year if everyone else is, but I won’t go beyond one small glass. And I don’t like being around drunk people. It’s rarely been a good experience for me. People are better with some inhibitions and social graces. Some people who are high are okay, but others aren’t, and most guys I know get really angry when they’re coming down, so I’d rather not bother with it.
Do what you want, and don’t care about other people.
