Emory Difficulty Level

My son was a summa cum laude graduate of Emory Class of 2007; there was no 4.0 graduate in his class, and from what they were told, no one in the past decade or so had graduated with a perfect 4.0. He did get a 4.0 for a semester a couple of times but to do it all 8 semesters…? It’s too easy to get one or two terrible A-'s!

Basically, don’t worry about it.

Emory admitted students that it knew could do the work, do it well, and do it consistently, so you will be fine.

During his years at Emory, my son worked very hard. Very hard! But he also found plenty of time to have a girlfriend, do his favorite extracurriculars, as well as intramural sports, some clubs, and some great volunteer work that led to his present employment in DC.
So don’t worry about the workload and don’t worry about a perfect 4.0–just worry about doing your best and enjoying your time on campus.

I think what the Dean was saying is that losing the 4.0 sometime during your 4 years is very probable, even for highly intelligent and motivated students. Many students who come in trying for a 4.0 do indeed achieve excellently close results - 3.9+, which given the right EC accomplishments and rec letters, can set you up for grad school admission as well as the 4.0 would have. So don’t worry about getting an A- was the Dean’s message. Worry about having something less than an extraordinary college experience.
