First, congrats on your acceptances to both Emory and UVA, two very impressive colleges. I’ll try to be as unbiased as possible in this post, but I go to school here at Emory. That said, I live in Charlottesville and will comment on UVA’s many positive attributes as well.

In terms of academics, they are very much on the same level. Both have rigorous academic standards and are highly selective. I don’t think you could decide on one rather than the other on the basis of academic standard.

Beauty of the campus: It is very much a personal preference; While UVA has picturesque traditional Jeffersonian architecture, Emory has a more “californian” look to it, with lots of swish modern buildings and marble.

Prestige: UVA is one of the best public colleges, Emory is called ‘one of the new ivies’. I would say that Emory is ever so slightly more impressive, though, for three reasons. Firstly, Emory is ranked 20th, UVA 25th. Emory also has slightly better test scores and a slightly lower acceptance rate. And, less can say they attended Emory than UVA, as Emory has roughly 7,000 students while UVA has more than 15,000. That leads me on to size, where I think Emory has the upper hand as I think a school with 5,000-7,000 student is perfect.

More fun: Emory is in Atlanta, a bustling city where there is much more to do than Charlottesville. If you’re going out on a Friday night, being in Atlanta is certainly going to be more fun than Charlottesville.

I hope this helps your decision and if you have further questions let me know
