Engineer Husbands

The past 24 hours have reminded me that I have the disorganized type of engineer.

Yesterday DH couldn’t go anywhere for a while because he couldn’t find the part of his wallet with the driver’s license & credit card. Mad search of the house, thoughts of the last restaurant he was in & other person’s car. Finally found it in his other pants. Not the first time this has happened, btw. I should have known.

Then S emails me–credit card has expired, have I seen the new one? I seem to remember a couple of months ago when it arrived I mailed it to him…but I’m vague b/c it’s not my job to remember this. I know he’s been incredibly busy, but some things are important to keep track of. It’s probably in a stack of mail he hasn’t opened yet.

Grrr.

yep. grrrrrr. I have the disorganized-engineer-type son. Love him, but grrrrr.

My twin sons are high school seniors (duh - it’s how I found this site!), but this year, they are full time college students at two local colleges. They are taking Calculus II and Physics II and my DH is LOVING this. As I type this, they have books heaped up on the dining room table trying to figure out some physics problem. They’ve also got the china cabinet full of legos (all sorted/organized, of course) open, so I’m thinking they’re making something and it’ll be a late night. My D, definitely NOT an engineer type at all, has spent most of the evening rolling her eyes!

Courtesy note:
My mother in law warned me before we got married. “Look at his father…”
I married him anyway, because H wasn’t as absent minded or ‘focused’ as his Dad, but I forgot to think about genetics!

Son got a heavy dose of those genes…

My computer science/math major D was two when we knew that she had inherited “the gene”. She was sitting on the floor of her bedroom sorting out the wooden beads that you string on shoe laces. She had a pile of large round green beads and a pile of small round green beads, a pile of large square, yellow beads and small, yellow, square beads. Oh, engineers.

Good stuff. I’m not an engineering husband (yet) but I’ve recently found the joys of quick decision making. I used to research my tech buys down to details that never really matter in the end. Now, I see the link between time & $$ almost like the way I learned about time & space. Just give hubby an extra constraint on the research: completion time. He might even get addicted to that! After the purchase, I bet he, like me, just enjoys it and doesn’t give another thought to the analyses. O the freedom it brings!

inkbottle-

you should give motivational talks to engineering groups!

I just found this thread and am laughing. I did not know that all engineers are alike. I have finally learned if I really want something, just go out and buy it - no matter what the item is, I always get the comment “I can make that”. Or if something needs to be fixed around the house, “I’m not paying someone to fix that, I can do it myself”. He will read his books on wiring, plumbing, you name it, and will do it himself. But now that he has been working so much, he doesn’t have the time and nothing gets done. I have decided I am making a list of everything I want done and am making phone calls and hiring people to do it and he will just come home one day and things will be done. And yes, he is the master packer of the car, and researches anything and everything to death, no matter what it is. All engineer husbands must be the same. Now how many of your engineer husbands have no sense of direction?

Nope. All the engineers in our families have GPS built in. Major point of pride for these guys. I, on the other hand, have some variant of geographic dyslexia.

inkbottle - lol - I think what bothered my H most about living in Germany was having to buy everything instantly, without researching and unable to read the fine print. (And paying cash - not a check/credit card society!) Car, piano, rental contracts, coffee pot, washer, dryer, fridge… the list goes on.

Now I think he’s trying to make up for lost time.

My H also has the built in GPS. Either that or my sense of direction (which is awful) is so bad, I’m unaware that he is going in circles. I do know that the kids would rather ride with me when going someplace new — because they know dad will never stop to ask for directions!

Oh yes, they would rather drive around or walk around lost for an hour than ask someone for directions. Mine finally bought a GPS so we’re good when we’re driving somewhere now. But it’s the navigating walking somewhere (NYC, finding the car at the airport) that is still the problem.

For those H’s who still have a Palm and are too cheap to spring for a real GPS, may I recommend the Palm-compatible “soft-GPS”

[Palm Pilot Links](http://home.att.net/~bobstothfang/palmlinks.htm#softgps)

My H (who is not, technically, an engineer) is offended by my GPS!

Okay, time for me to admit my shock – the bunny castle referenced on the first page of this thread has not only been started, it’s finished. H got some power tools from FIL for Christmas, and on Saturday we went to Home Depot and bought materials for the castle. (And it only took about 543256 hours in Home Depot, too.)

Tonight we went back for a few more materials, and the bunny house is done! I am surprised (and eating a little crow). Newlyweds for the win! :D

Bunny castle and engineer husband are here.

Sweet success, mollie! My H also finished a project today. He was looking for a used Saturn. He spent hours looking, calling, talking, checking them out — for 3 solid weeks, like a man possessed. He finally found a situation that pleased him … and that is no mean feat. We have a very cute little new-to-us car in our driveway. And I have my H back!

I had a feeling it was all about the tools.

It’s probably a good thing that you photographed it, Mollie. Just to remind yourself over the years that it can be done.

No sense of direction from my engineer either
The current project in our house is a master bathroom. Started early fall, with the goal of finishing by Christmas. When Christmas was fast approaching, I refused to clean/decorate our bedroom (can you imagine, there are sinks, tiles, pipes, toilet etc. just “hanging around” )and instead I demanded we move to our library. We have been sleeping around books since, I can’t complain - there is a wood burning fireplace there and I have always wanted to have a real fireplace in my bedroom  . During a conversation the other day, I have casually inquired about the prospect of moving back to our “proper” bedrom for Easter. “More likely summer” - was the reply I got. I guess he does not mind all the books :-)

Mollie–don’t you find it amazing and delightful to say “my husband” and be able to post on the “Engineer Husbands” thread?

Then after the first year reality sets in. :D

Mollie–congrats to you and your bunny! (Any chance you could share the plans with another bunny owner?)
