Essential Oils and Multi-Level Marketing.

Yes, you’re right, @BunsenBurner, the delivery method I referenced. I believe the Nespresso patent has expired, probably why more are offering the same system. I know the K Cup patent expired a few years back and that market exploded with offerings. I personally have an issue with both systems from a trash creation angle but easy for me to say as I’m not a coffee fan.

I think you can buy reusable nespresso compatible pods on eBay if you look around.

The systems still have a Nespresso logo next to the brands… maybe there is still some life left in those patents. The capsules are where the gold really is. Those reusables are - sadly! - crap. Tried them. Tried the plastic knockoffs. Almost ruined my machine.

Thanks, @greenwitch. Seems like the reusables kind of defeat the purpose of the easy factor.

I agree they are a great invention, though. We had them in a European vacation rental around 15 years ago, before I ever saw them here and the coffee lovers in the family think they brew a great cup, much better than the K cups. The coffee lovers in my family have been going very low tech and old school using their little Italian espresso pots on the stovetop recently. They like their coffee strong.

Is there any scientific evidence for this? I know, I know, “big pharma” is blocking any research in the area, right? Sigh.

Like with all vitamins, vitamin C only helps when you’re deficient. The vast majority of people living in developed countries get enough vitamin C. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19263912

I do take vitamins B12 and D because I’m chronically deficient.

Just read this article on how essential oils can be used for food preservation.

I am a believer in natural remedies, and ayurvedic medicine.
I would rather treat something with natural products than to take a prescription to solve the problem.

Many pharmaceuticals are based on naturally occurring chemicals. For example, statin drugs can be of fungal origin, but people seem to prefer to take them in pill form rather than add oyster mushrooms to all of their food.

There are "prescriptions " made of natural substances. Just because something has been prescribed by a medical doctor doesn’t necessarily make it bad or “unnatural.” Likewise, the mere fact that something is natural does not mean that it is either safe or effective.

I prefer to put as little as possible into my body outside of what I eat and drink (and figuring out just what a “healthy diet” actually is could fill up a 100 pages in a new thread). I don’t think it’s generally a good thing to be on tons of medicines. Nor do I believe that taking tons of supplements, natural or otherwise, is the best tactic either. Surely we wouldn’t have survived as a species this long if it was necessary to assault our bodies constantly with food, drink, and (man made or natural) additional substances all damn day.

I don’t claim to have the answer. Medicines absolutely save lives and improve quality of life. OTOH, as a nurse, I’ve seen some pretty bad outcomes from overmedication, “natural” products included. I wish we would spend more time figuring out how to prevent diseases instead of focusing most of our efforts on just managing symptoms.

Amen to that.

As I remind my mom when she goes off on her natural blah blah blah stuff- things like cyanide are completely natural

The fact is, life is better since science-based medicine. But maybe I’m biased since I’d have been dead by now if I was born only a few decades earlier. (Doesn’t mean I think pills are the cure for everything, but I don’t understand the extreme avoidance that many people have just because it’s behind a pharmacist’s counter.)

“As I remind my mom when she goes off on her natural blah blah blah stuff- things like cyanide are completely natural”

Anthrax, too.

The MLM stuff makes my head explode. After this thread, I’m just grateful that none of my social media friends or family are pushing essential oils.

Of course, now that I typed that, I’ll probably log in tomorrow to find I have been added to some online EO party.
Ugh.

An acquaintance sells doTerra EO. I see her updates on FB, but she keeps it pretty unobtrusive. More like a hobby than anything else. Much better than the Rodan+Fields seller. Ugh. Now that is annoying.
