Experiences with the Supernatural/Unexplained

My FIL passed away in January from lung cancer. A day after the funeral my MIL mentioned that a man came up to her while she was sitting in the front row at the cemetery. He leaned down, touched her shoulder and said: “I’ll be right over there if you need me”. She looked for him after the casket was lowered but didn’t see him anywhere. She said his voice sounded familiar but she just couldn’t place it.

My hubby was sitting behind his mother and two chairs away. He said he saw the same man and heard him speak. Nobody else at the cemetery had this experience. What was strange was that I was standing behind my hubby and didn’t see any of this happen.

It wasn’t a big funeral, about 15 family members at the cemetery.

It was driving MIL crazy. Hubby thinks the man’s voice was also familiar- sounded like his uncle- who died 12 years ago. When H mentioned to his mom that he sounded like his Uncle- she too thought it was him.

H’s uncle was his father’s brother- they were extremely close. Before his uncle died, he was afraid to see the doctor. FIL went with him and ultimately they both got their PSA tested. Both came out with cancer- Uncle had stage 4 prostate cancer and FIL had the beginnings of prostate cancer. FIL went through surgery and chemo and lived for 12 more years. H’s uncle only lived 1 year after the diagnosis. We always thought that the uncle saved the FIL. FIL and MIL were devastated when his FIL’s brother died.

MIL believes that it was H’s uncle- believes he was there to help show her husband the path so they could once again be together. It is the one thing that has helped her through the grieving process. She and FIL were married 55 years and had known each other for over 60 years- since they were 11 years old.

@VeryHappy Human brain has many fascinating properties and modes of operation, from useful ones like intuition and placebo effect to confusing ones like false memories and hallucinations.

@romanigypsyeyes said above that they could write a book with all of their experiences…me too! Mine started just prior to my 29th birthday and have been somewhat constant and consistent since (I’m 60).

My own D had her first (she’s had a few since) experience when she was almost 2 (I was 31). The first 3 months of my pregnancy I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. I used to pack up a beach umbrella and a book and hike into a remote bay, through a kiawe thicket, that also housed a very small canoe club. The canoers had various canoes being crafted by hand and it was very tranquil. Fast forward to 2 years later I took my (then) baby to visit family/friends. One day I packed a little picnic and we went for a drive. She wanted a picnic at the beach & I drove to “my” bay, thinking the water was passive and there’s shade, I parked, and we hiked through the thicket, and as we came upon the canoes she walked verrrrry slowly. “I came here before!” she was so excited. “You did? When?” “When I was in your tummy!” We had never talked about the bay, nor had I ever really talked about that place before. All I could say was “yes, you did” -

There are so many experiences I’ve had I too could write a book.

Some are as quick as driving down the freeway when I see someone on the side of the road (or the center divider, or standing in a lane), and when I look again they’re not there, (nor is there anything there that could be misidentified as someone) but oh yes, they were! Others are very long and incredibly detailed.

With one experience I was with a new friend, hiking, and when the experience was over (it seemed to be about 5 minutes long), I was standing next to him, in the same spot we had been when it began, I looked at my watch and more than 3 hours had passed. We both looked at each other and I asked “did you see that?” When he said yes, we started comparing notes, and had a mutual experience - it was a trip and a half!

None of mine were “scary” but all are crystal clear.

I regularly have dreams where my late parents are present.

After my dad passed, we took my family, dad’s 2nd wife and my younger (30+ younger than me to visit places that were important to my dad. As we sat in a church where he had been a minister, we all felt his presence. It was super spooky

Whoa.

My daughter needed some xrays when she was two. The tech asked if I wanted to come in with her and said that of course I couldn’t if I was pregnant. Kiddo said I was pregnant and insisted I stay out. I stayed out because she was so upset. Even though I was on birth control.

Two weeks later I had missed my period and had a positive pregnancy test.

A recent edition of the New Yorker had an article about a British psychiatrist in the 1960’s who believed some people could predict the future and solicited predictions in a newspaper. See https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/03/04/the-psychiatrist-who-believed-people-could-tell-the-future

I heard my mother talking on the phone when I was little, the day we found out that my grandmother had died. My mother knew because “she came to me last night”, she told whoever was on the other end of the phone. I wasn’t supposed to hear that conversation, but now I wonder if I can ask around to find out who she confided that to.

I have a cousin who has seen and conversed with deceased people in our family since he was a toddler. He saw a portrait of our uncle who had died in WWII and told his mother that he talked to that man all the time, and he was shushed because people were more easily spooked by this sort of thing back then. He reached out to me after my father died and it was quite comforting.

I’m glad that I don’t have that particular talent because it sounds terrifying! I’ve spoken to people who’ve seen apparitions and I don’t fancy that at all. My imagination is vivid enough, thank you. But I wonder if it is all electrical or other types of energy waves and having a brain that can intercept or interpret them. Who knows?

There was a funny entry in our neighborhood list serve - someone was asking about a building that had been newly renovated into apartments. They were wondering about practical things like price and how the management company was but they got an answer like this - the building used to be a doggy day care but decades ago it was an orphanage. Several people saw or heard ghosts of children, but don’t worry, they were pretty chill and just wanted to play with the dogs. ;

I had just had my first child, a boy. My grandfather had passed away about two years before but our whole family would have little anecdotes about how they still felt his presence. He was a big man with a big voice who loved his family dearly.
My son was a horrible sleeper and big eater so I would spend a lot of the night nursing him in a comfortable rocking chair outside of our bedroom. The first few months I remember mostly the exhaustion that you’re not used to when you have your first child. One night I was rocking my son on my lap and I had fallen asleep when all of a sudden I heard my grandfathers voice yell “you’re going to drop him, wake up!“ I sat up straight and grabbed my son who was just about to roll off my lap and I looked up and saw my grandfather a few feet in front of me looking at me. I grabbed my son and being a little freaked out and ran into my bedroom and woke up my husband to have him come into the other room to see if my grandfather was still there. We looked and he wasn’t but I know I have definitely seen him. Little things like that happen infrequently to our extended family.
Another time was right after my grandfather‘s funeral mass. He was 100% Polish and very proud of it. His favorite bird was the Polish eagle and on family trips to the lake we would always make a point to search for an eagle. After his mass when we were all leaving in limousines to go to his burial we all looked over and in a small tree next to the church that was an eagle on a branch. While seeing an eagle isn’t that unusual anymore this was in a very busy New Jersey city about 25 years ago so we all felt it was my grandfather saying goodbye.

I walked into a crowded community pool center to register my kids for lessons and could not help but stare, nearly the entire time, at one of the women who worked there. She was engaged in discussion and light talk with someone near me, and talking across the desk, so facing me.

I remarked on how absolutely stunning she was, and inquired whether she always glowed the way she was then. When neither she nor anyone else present answered or responded in any way, I just let it drop.

After a few weeks of going there regularly and seeing her quite often, we would speak and laugh with one another, with the conversation often turning to family and children.

She told me that just after giving birth to her child, who was always with her in the Baby Bjorn, including the day I walked in to register, her mother, father and sister had come to visit and their small plane crashed, killing them all. I believe her sister was pregnant and announced that during the time of the family’s visit.

I then understood what I had seen when I first looked at this woman, my new acquaintance. When I first looked upon her, for the entire time of my being there during registration, three large, bright and shiny obelus danced on her face - on either cheek and forehead. The tiniest hint of the same faintly sparkled on her chin. I thought it was the most amazing thing ever, though apparently no one else did.

Though not a frequent occurrence by any means, this was not the first time an experience like this had happened. Each time I thought everyone else was having the same experience I was.

Went to visit my mom at my childhood home in another state. Went to sleep normally and was awakened by the sound piano being played downstairs. I went to check it out and get some milk. It grew louder as I drew nearer. I turned the corner and it just stopped. Huh. Poured my milk and went back to bed.

Got up for breakfast. And wasn’t going to mention it to her. It was the one used exclusively by a deceased sibling years earlier. Thought it might make her blue or uncomfortable. But something was bothering me. So I told her the story.

She grew ashen. And started to tremble a bit. And revealed that she has finally decided to part with it and had put it up for sale. Hadn’t told a soul. She took it as a sign and it came off the market ASAP. Still has it exactly where it has been for 30 years.

The music was real. Can’t explain it and if it was just an illusion, it still was a very strange coincidence.

Our family lives near the Manassas, VA, battlefield. One day, while traveling north on route 29, just approaching the intersection for the Battle of Bull Run, and on a sunny day, my 4 YO niece pointed her finger uptoward a hill and said, “Look at all those men!” We asked her what she meant. She was adamant, “There! Up there, with guns.”

I have a few. As a young married couple my DH and I were in the den of our home watching a TV news type show on PBS about the paranormal activity. It also had a segment on Russian research into mind control. They had people bending spoons and moving things. My Dh said “I don’t believe in any of this crap. I tried when I was younger and nothing ever happens. I would have to see it with my own eyes” As soon as he finished saying that, the glass cover on the light on the ceiling fell to the floor, bounced, and landed on his foot. We started laughing and he said it was just a coincidence and it must have been loose. When he got up to replace it, that overhead light and the TV went off. The rest of the electricity was fine and the table lamp on the table beside the TV was still on. They both came on about 30 seconds later.

I can hear the songs on the radio when the radio is off, especially when I am waking up in the morning. I don’t actually hear sounds but I “hear” it in my mind. Sometimes I am humming a song and the alarm goes off and the radio is playing the song and typically at the same spot in the song (not always). This happens in the car as well. I can also “hear” the thoughts of some people. I have answered students at school when they have not asked the question out loud. This also doesn’t happen with all students or all the time but frequent enough that I recognize it and remind myself that something has not actually been said yet.

I have a friend who says she is an empath (I think that is the word) - she can feel other people’s feelings. She knew I was sick before I knew and likely saved my life. She urged me to go to the dr. where they discovered a large tumor. I had been exhausted but no other symptoms. When I was at my sickest point and things looked bleak she told me that she had a great feeling and that I was going to be OK. The moment she told me that I suddenly felt calm and I believed her. I was released from the hospital less than 24 hours later and received much good new after.

I’ve had some pretty profound experiences of a super natural nature. My YDD went through a period when she was very young in which she was very sick quite often and we were legitimately very very concerned about her for quite awhile. I prayed like I’ve never prayed before for quite awhile about it. One night in the middle of the night, I awoke with a start because of a dream I’d just had in which an angel came to my bedside, knelt down, wrapped me with his/her wings, gave me a hug, and said that YDD was going to be just fine, that I had nothing to worry about, and that God was watching over her.

I never remember dreams. Except that time I did. Remembered the whole thing.

A couple of years ago, a very dear friend died quite suddenly and unexpectedly. We’d been close friends since college & she lived in another part of the country from me. I went to bed at my usual time, but slept rather fitfully. My DH was up late doing some work from home that night. I kept tossing & turning and was exhausted but just couldn’t get settled. I was laying such that my back was to the bedroom door, so my back was facing DH’s side of the bed.

I was still very awake when I felt someone kneel down or push down on the bed…sort of like when you put one hand on the bed and whoever it was bent over and gently put their hand on the top of my head. I thought it was DH, so I said out loud, “DH, is that you?” He didn’t answer. I said it a couple more times, then turned around in bed and DH wasn’t even there. He was in his office still working on the computer and hadn’t stepped foot in the bedroom.

We have 2 cats and it wasn’t either of them either.

I found out the next day that my friend had passed away. The coroner estimated time of death was about the same time that I had that “visitation.” My friend’s sister and her parents also had similar visits that night.

Fast forward to 2 weeks later when I was at my friend’s parents’ house the day before the funeral…we were all hanging out in their family room. We were comparing notes about how we had all been visited by someone or something on that fateful night. I kept seeing out of the corner of my eye a woman with long blond hair wearing a long white dress with a sash around the middle. When I’d look in that direction, she disappeared.

My friend’s then 7 yr old niece saw her repeatedly in the weeks after she passed away. Saw my friend walking towards her with arms outstretched as if to hug her.

We’re all pretty certain that it was her way of telling us that she’s ok now and not to worry about her.

On earth, with 100’s of millions of cellphones w/ camera and video capability, if there were real UFO’s don’t you think we would have some pretty clear evidence of their existence by now? Sorry to rain on this parade but…

I had a dream that our neighbors house was on fire. Normally we would take the long road to visit our friends as it was easier but the next day BF and I decided to take the tough back road. HIs LandRover died on a slight hill. From there I saw that our neighbors house was on fire. They were not home. We broke into the house and just where I had seen the fire in my dream were the flames.

A few years earlier I had a dream that I found a fire in building in NYC. Nights later I was in NYC in a sketchy neighborhood. No one around. I turned and looked down the street and a building was on fire. We had to find a phone book to call the fire dept. Plus a quarter.

We drove away from our farmhouse and I told BF that we had to go back, change the collar or his New Foundland would choke to death. He did not want to drive back the two miles. We were camping in Canada and he called to see how the dog sitter was doing. Ralph, the dog, was found dead as the collar choked him.

My brother called to tell me his plans for the prom. Immediately I responded," If you do that you will have an accident". I received a call at 2 am that he was in the hospital.

I drove to work one day and my eye started twitching and my inner voice told me to go home. I ignored it.
There was a shooter in my building a few hours later.

I eventually closed off my portal. It was all so frightening and death was too close. Recently a psychic told me that I can invite it back and now can control how much is enough. Intriguing.

1- there is evidence - it’s a matter of whether or not you want to accept it. Even project blue book admitted they couldn’t explain away all the UFO reports - and that was their sole purpose.

2- That said, if a civilization is advanced enough to travel through space/time, don’t you think it can block itself from our primitive technology?

“There have been TV shows, Constantine & Sleepy Hollow that were cancelled that gave a taste of what “seeing” visions could be like and it seemed pretty unsettling. The person who saw the vision often couldn’t know if it was current, past or future and not always sure who was involved.”

Related to this, I used to love that TV show called Early Edition where the character played by Kyle Chandler got the paper a day early and had to decide what to do with this news. (He saved people rather than trying to get rich off stock price information.)

I have had a few experiences that involved scent — smelling the aftershave of a departed loved one and an overwhelming scent of burning related to a family member that had been cremated. I do believe that smell and sound are often unreported and unexplained sensations/experiences.

The problem with supernatural/unexplained phenomena is that we remember the hits but forget the huge number of failures.

However, on the other side, if the universe is deterministic and had a beginning then the arc of the universe is predetermined. This really screws with the idea of cause-and-effect because the particles/fields/etc already “know” what’s going to happen, so a significant rearrangement of those particles and fields, like in a atomic bomb explosion, could be foreshadowed in a vague way (that’s about as woo-woo as I’ll get). Anyway, I’m a terrible writer, which is a shame, because I think this would make a great science fiction book. I sketched an outline of a story where this “foreshadowing” resulted in an increase in anxiety in some percentage of the population. For example, a guy living outside Hiroshima grows increasingly anxious before the bombing and doesn’t go into work that day, a woman executive is too anxious to go on a flight on 9/11, etc. Others learned how to profit from that anxiety by monitoring the firehose of info coming from twitter and facebook then making global stock market bets (with DARPA’s post-9/11 FutureMAP being biggest public exposure of this technique).
