experiences with two CSI claims

CSI also covers accidental damage of electronics. DD set her phone down in the bathroom and did not realize it was on a wet spot(her story;)).

By the way, CSI also offers that same coverage to grad students, faculty and staff of colleges and universities. My S went to work for his university after he graduated and was able to continue the CSI policy he had in undergrad. It’s cheaper than renters insurance, the deductible is just $25 and it covers accidental damage.

UPDATE: So, I was correct in predicting that CSI is saying the equivalent of “tough luck!”
I spoke with the CSI rep this morning (my S has no phone…) and she said that the damaged phone needs to go to an Apple Store and get the repair authorization, blah, blah, blah. Everything I have read online indicates that iPhones which have been submerged in a lake for a period of time canNOT be repaired. I explained to her that with my 3 kids, this is the first time we are making a claim for any of them in 10 years, that I am a college consultant at my high school and recommend their service to my students, blah, blah, blah, no dice. I’m disappointed in the service in this instance because it is such an unusual situation, plus what I have read about the phone being unrepairable with the type of water damage it sustained. :(

mom of3sons…continue with the claim, you can always sell the “repaired” phone. Worst case you’ll get a nice refurbished one and make some $$ back, maybe they’ll send enough for a brand new one. Check out iphone prices on ebay.

Have him ship you the phone and you can handle it. It will be deemed unrepairable and you will send that info to CSI and all will be good. I’m pretty sure htey will pay for anew one so it will be fine. You may need proof that the damaged phone was active on the cell plan at the time of loss. I printed a screenshot of our contract before the new phone was put on it. I can’t remember for sure, but I think I did that because I couldn’t find a receipt for it, or the receipt was for $50 (upgrade price which wasn’t enough to replace it) I’m sure you can get something from you carrier.

DS had CSI and his phone got dropped in a puddle. We sent it in and they sent a check for the amount listed on Verizon.com to replace it (less deductible.) It was a blackberry.

Also, if it’s not too late. Can he pick up a cheap feature phone, or borrow one from somebody who isn’t using one, until this is settled? When DS’s broke he had to use whatever spare we had until we could find a suitable replacement. The check came quite fast though.

Great idea about using an old phone.

Or you can do what we did in a similar situation: just buy a cheap go-phone at Best Buy and a $20-30 simcard. Use it until you sort out the situation with the smart phone.

Just don’t be surprised if CSI drops you after paying for a replacement phone.

So, here’s the story. I found his old feature phone, charged it up, packed it up with the charger and we shipped it out to him via FedEx overnight. Meanwhile, the new iPhone we purchased and had shipped out to him arrived today. We told him to just pack it away and not open it. We instructed him to use the same box we shipped his old phone in to return the water-logged iPhone, having included a return FedEx shipping label for him, so that all he has to do is find out how to arrange for a pick-up. Once I know the damaged iPhone is on it’s way, I’ll make an appointment at the local Apple store to take it in so that they can officially tell me that it can’t be fixed. I guess that will satisfy CSI and then they will pay for the new phone. My son would have been much better off just saying that it fell in the lake while he was researching and that he couldn’t retrieve it.

No good deed goes unpunished!;)

It is amazing how they can stay in business. I guess these nice policies promote “truthfulness”. We had coverage for S1 his first year but never filed a claim and I didn’t renew. With S2 the cell-phone insurance has already dropped him (two replacements in one year :-), so maybe we’ll sign him up for CSI!
