My son once asked me how we changed the channels or volume on the tv without a remote. um, well, you got off your butt and went over to the tv and turned the dial.

My kitchen phone still has the long curly wire. Somehow like the sound better than portables, though have those for other rooms.

Due to the early exposure to Leibfraumilch, (loved woman’s milk) I still have an affection for Rhine wines. Probably declasse to a wine connissour…

Manual car windows. My kids marvel at the ways we had to exert ourselves back in the antediluvian days.

Hey, we had to GET OUT OF THE CAR to open and close the garage door. Even in the snow.

In a few years they will be trying to explain ‘maps’ to their kids who are used to an electronic voice saying “turn right in .2 miles … recalculating”.

We discovered that during power outages the only phone that worked in our house was our kitchen phone (err, garage phone) with the long culy wire. And dial-up Internet :), too.

The FAA thread made me very nostalgic for the times when airlines actually provided service to their paying customers and everyone could go through the security up to the gates. Sigh! The way things are going, pretty soon all air travelers will be simply loaded up in crates and stacked inside a plane like luggage.

and they’ll be naked

^^Indeed!

Ah, CC - the only place on Earth where it is hip to be old! :D

momof3: E ticket from DisneyLAND…

“Cut and Paste” WAS exactly that?

D just found out the “underwater basket-weaving” was not something I made up AND it didn’t include SCUBA gear. geez…IS THIS MY KID???

SueInPhilly:
Slide rules? Phffft. Real men (OK, and women) didn’t use slide rules. They used hard-copy logarithmic tables instead. Some magic numbers got burned into memory. Like 0.4771 and 0.3010 .

Good lord - I vaguely remember log tables - how old does that make me? Never could get the hang of slide rules.

about the same age as me, I think…

Another school memory from wa-a-a-y back – no one used a backpack to carry books, etc. We just carried everything in our arms. (Of course this was while we tromped through 3 feet of snow walking 3 miles to school, girls in their skirts …)

Actually having a huge dictionary to check spelling/definitions and, if you were fortunate, a set of encyclopedias so you could “look things up” for papers and such. Gotta love the internet!

Pushing the taste envelope here, but…how shall I say… netherland gear for Aunt Flo’s visits.

mom2three - I grew up in CF - went to WPHS. How about you?

Yes, I remember those E tickets! Did you ever go to any of those “Back to School Parties” or “Valentine Parties” out there where you could buy one ticket & ride all night? Guess that system worked so well that they changed the whole format.

re: the OP - My kids’ friends laugh because we say t.v. “clicker” for “remote”. I think it comes from the old channel changers that used to make a big clicking sound. We try to tell them it’s because we had channel changers in the “early days” of the technology!

Anyway, we’re weird. ![]()
(Just wait until we get our studio finished & have our old record player hooked up!)

O.K.

First, I got the biggest laugh out of this since I am packing to go on my spring break and long airplane ride. Hah, Hah. “Sigh! The way things are going, pretty soon all air travelers will be simply loaded up in crates and stacked inside a plane like luggage.” Thanks B.B.

I have one of those old phones with the curly wire but it’s green and my wireless network messes with its sound now and again. I just love having folks over who need to use a phone! I have a cell and a wireless one too! But they are hidden.

When I registered for college back in the day, we used the punch cards, we were instructed how to dress. “Like ladies with stockings and no pants!” That was college. (By my Sophomore year, things changed rapidly) Forget h.s. We got to wear bermudas once a year on Bermuda Day. Whoopee!

I still have a record player and records. I got it from Canadian friends, its a sony and I can’t part with it. I inherited a classical music record collection as well. What a sound!

The way I look at it, some things change, some things stay the same and so much can co-exist.

Believe it or not, we got our first car with power windows two years ago. My kids still are not used to not having to roll down the window.

We also have a long curly phone cord in the kitchen. It’s nice to have one phone that never needs recharging.

My H collects manual typewriters–he has three now and uses them to write letters. Luddites R Us.

I always told the kids, when watching Oz, how I didn’t know it turned to color till I was much older, and they always rolled their eyes. Sometimes I’ll refer to an “album” that they also like but know only as a CD, and refer to the Side Two songs (for instance–Side 2 of Joshua Tree has all the less well known songs.)
Again, rolled eyes, and sighs.

I still have a car with roll up windows.

at least if I drive into a lake I have a way to get out of the car.
