Extenuating Non-Custodial Parent Circumstances

If your parents have dual custody…and you “live equally with both”…what would qualify you for a non-custodial parent waiver?

Your boarding school doesn’t count as your permanent address. Your permanent address is the parent address where you reside most. Sounds like that is your mom.

What benefits do you have in Texas??

@thumper1 that is all correct.

I think you need to take care about how attempt to leverage situations to your advantage, e.g poor old dad is good enough when AK seemed to offer geographic diversity, but dead beat dad when you want his financials discounted WRT FA. That sort of approach might show up in other parts of your application. When did you last stay in AK? Who pays for your boarding school?

@Sybylla summer of 2018 both of my parents moved from my old city. I have been living at my school since before both of them moved, so I haven’t been to either of their new homes. I am on a full scholarship at my school, and i actually pay for my own expenses. Before coming to my school, i only lived with my mother, despite what the divorce decree suggested. I’ll admit, I was primarily curious about geographic advantage in my previous thread, and I felt like that was pretty open, but all information in this thread is true and I would prefer if we could focus on it…sorry if I offended you, I appreciated your help in my old thread

@thumper1 i benefit from the hazelwood legacy act, which entails full tuition for a public university in Texas for my undergraduate degree.

Also, to answer previous question, child support is ~$12,000 a year. And my sister is currently attending college on a full ride scholarship to a texas public state school, so it is not a financial strain.

You have fine stats. Apply to University of Alabama for their guaranteed awards. Their application and scholarship application are available in July and you will have a decision…and aid…by about Labor Day.

What was your PSAT?

Your stats are excellent…

Apply on the early side to Pitt. Best chances of aid are for early birds.

Will UT be affordable?

As noted above, University of Chicago does not require non-custodial parent info. Vanderbilt doesn’t require the NCP Profile but does reserve the right to ask for “additional information”.

Look at the list of Profile schools and find some that do not require the NCP form.

Rice is also a good option…talk to your school counselor about that.

Actually…have a chat with your school counselor about options. But make it clear that finances are a significant consideration. Perhaps they can give you some direction.

@thumper1 okay, I emailed my School counselor to set up a meeting. Thank you so much for all of your information!

My PSAT was a 1480. Not the best and if I qualify for NM, it will be close. Yes, UT will be affordable especially with my family’s govt benefit - the hazelwood legacy act NOT post 911 gi Bill.

@BelknapPoint thank you! That really helped me understand the expectations that some schools have for my stepmother.

any chance you might qualify for the same full ride scholarship your sister got?

Your stats are excellent…

search the posts for automatic merit but University of Alabama would be a solid choice for you. There are others as well.

I would just stick with FAFSA only schools and not worry about Dad’s info. My son is in a similar situation. His Dad doesn’t make 200K, but easily triple what I do and will not help at all with college, so CSS profile schools aren’t a great idea.

Some CSS profile schools will only look at your mom and dad and not your step-mother. This is very school specific and you might need to email the financial aid office at each of the individual schools that you are thinking of regarding their policy.

Since you have such terrific stats, let me mention how very nice it could be to go to a school where you get a significant merit scholarship so you can get away from all the financial drama going on between your parents.

Have you actually asked your Mom and Dad how much they are willing to contribute to your college education? Don’t assume. Some divorce decrees include a stipulation that both parents must pay a certain amount. Of course, you can’t get water from a stone if they do not have it. You have good stats, go for merit.

@cshell2 just letting you know…there are many Profile schools that do NOT require the non-custodial Parent Profile…and also don’t ask for non-custodial Parent info in any other way. You need to check each college financial aid website for their requirements.

But don’t dismiss all Profile Schools…because there are many that do not require non-custodial parent info…at all…ever (except for child and spousal support paid to you).

@thumper1 - Thank you. There are a couple schools we might revisit and see if we can find more info.

I agree with thumper1.

This is what happened with my friend’s daughter with FA at CMU. My friend went through a bitter divorce. The ex-wife was relentless on going after him and also prevented him from seeing his kids. He paid the alimony and child support on time and tried to see his kids as much as he could. When his daughter was admitted to CMU, she asked my friend to fill out FA application. My friend refused because he did not want his ex-wife to have access to his financial situation (he had a bit of windfall from previous investment that came about after the divorce). My friend’s daughter ended up getting 40-50K/year FA based on mother’s income and assets. My friend is paying for his daughter to attend the college (above FA) even though he did not want to fill out financial information. I do believe CMU uses CSS.
