I don’t think he assembled that team other than the sophomores and freshmen.
Yes he was newish.
Busch was named head coach in July 2013, so the only students he likely was personally involved in recruiting for the team, would have been the ones who were “first years” in 2014.
I agree, a lot of things are not clear. I do get that what we are hearing is mostly just the one side, and what we read is based on how the media chooses to portray things, to boot. And of course, what we read is seen through our own personal lens too.
Even things as simple as how the journalist words things can be viewed differently. So, for example, when ABC stated, " UVA suspended the upper classmen for the rest of the semester", do they mean UVA broadly (meaning the Administration, etc), or narrowly (meaning the coach). And by “suspended…for the rest of the semester”, depending on the former, does that mean just in regards to the 5’s involvement with swim team, or suspended from the university entirely? There seems to be several policies the 5 could have been broken (athletic code of conduct, school code of conduct, and specific anti hazing rules) that could lead to any number of scenarios. We probably will never know due to privacy rules.
And some media reports even seem to contradict one other. I thought that the Daily Progress articles (linked below) gave the most thorough detail. But, the DP stated in the second one, that 2 of the 5 swimmers DID go back to the team, and went on to swim personal bests. That contradicts the ABC article claiming that no one went back.
Or, the swimmers did not like the new coach or feel the punishment was fair, so they made the decision on their own to go. They had to miss an entire semester of competition, which probably had a significant impact on their personal swimming goals. I’m not saying they didn’t deserve it, but if they felt it was undeserved under the circumstances, I can see them not wanting to swim with the program anymore.
Marcantonio appeared on Northwestern’s swim team roster. Doesn’t look like the 2 that Michigan took are swimming at all this year. Their names are not on the roster.
That is last year’s roster. It hasn’t been updated for the coming academic year.
Oh ok I thought a poster upthread said Macantonio swam this year for Northwestern.
Maybe he did. I don’t know when he transferred. I was referring to the UMich roster not being updated yet.
The one I looked at was 14’-15’ so thought that they transferred to Michigan and swam as well. None of my kids swam so don’t know when the season starts and finishes.
I think the transfer announcement for the UMich guys came out in June or so for next Fall. I remember reading it but I’m sorry I’m too lazy to go back and find it. My guess is that they did not swim for UVA in the Spring (assuming they were still enrolled there), to preserve their NCAA eligibility to swim another extra semester at UMich. I’m just guessing but that makes sense to me.
I believe you are correct Bay. Regardless they will be swimming for UofM fall 2015 I believe. One is coming in as a senior and one is coming in as a junior, so the junior for sure will have 2 seasons regardless.
Be very interesting to see if the 5 defendants hire the same counsel and mount a united defense or if they hire separate attorneys and start pointing fingers at each other. I find the fact that 2 of them transferred interesting.
If your kids are weak, prohibit them from joining the Greek system. If they join, they’ll be directed to learn the interpersonal rules of etiquette and courtesy, they’ll be asked to volunteer their time and/or money for charity (do you give to charity? if not, put your self-righteous judgment on its can), they’ll be asked to care about others more than themselves, and they’ll be asked to stay strong in school and be loyal.
Those are clearly awful objectives.
If you want to have fun, donate to charity, and learn to be a gentleman/lady, join the Greek system.
I doubt they would point fingers at each other. There’s absolutely no reason to do that.
The swim program at UVa has been in turmoil since the “old” coach left and the new coach came, The two that transferred probably wanted a more stable situation or they did not like the new coach or the new coach did not like them, plus UofM is no “downgrade” either from a swimming or an academic perspective. One of the kids quit swimming altogether so something was going on. Not often a Div 1 swimmer in a good program like UVa just up and quits. I suspect there’s much to be told and it may never even get to that but there’s probably no finger-pointing needed. If it’s not dismissed I suspect you’ll hear one story and then you’ll hear five pretty similar stories. …the kid better have a shark for an attorney. Systemic, threatening, degrading, humiliating and violent hazing by upperclassmen according to Marcantonio’s lawsuit - that’s a mouthful to prove and to prove that he was forced to to do it and according to Marcantonio’s attorney through false imprisonment as his complaint states.
Interesting, but not surprising. They obviously went through a very negative experience at UVA with the investigation, referral to the DA and living through the wondering whether they would be criminally charged, then suspended from swimming by their coach and administration. I cannot imagine an athlete wanting to hang around under those circumstances. With respect to the three that did not transfer, it appears that one just up and quit the team then probably graduated and is done. The other two may have been unable to get offers from another program to transfer, or were out of eligibility at the end of the academic year, so stuck it out and graduated and left (after achieving personal records at ACC champs).
What is more interesting to me is that the plaintiff’s account of how the coach treated him was negative, and he was one of the few team members who was actually recruited by this new coach. One would expect that a coach would be more likely to support his personal recruits than those team members he inherited and might be resistant to the change.
Or the coach didn’t believe him or thought he was a disruptive force or a whiner or figured he just needed to toughen up as a freshman all are as equally possible as the coach not caring…but the five and their friends will tell that tale if it comes to anything.
I can’t believe the speculation in this thread. Anything but the guy was hazed. I don’t know exactly what happened at UVA…but I know with 100 percent certainty hazing happens.
I was watching a tv show about the 1999 womens world cup champion. They were participating in team bonding activites. There was nothing mean. The team was world chamions.
I thought a couple of the woman posters here were self haters. Women haters. Now I realize…you are man haters. Some of you think us men can’t control ourselves. So you have to make excuses for us.
Men don’t need to be treated like some inferior species. We aren’t feral. Most of are civilized. We can take personal responsibility for our actions. We don’t need making excuses for us. We can take personal for our actions.
What a bunch of crap.
Yeah… It’s a tradition.
My mom is 81. I don’t need a mommy anymore. My son is ok if something happens to his mom. I hope nothing happens to his mom.
Frankly, my mom never protected me as much after age 5 as some of you want to protect these swimmers.
There must be some Freudian stuff going on I don’t understand because I am not a mom.
Maybe you should go ask your mommy about it, dstark.
