EZ-Pass question

I went back and scoured my account and I do not see that I have been charged .75 per month. But I definitely have been charged in the past and still thought that was the case via the FAQ

Interesting. Could I have been grandfathered in? We’ve had ours since 2010…

Let’s not tell them they forgot us!

We don’t get charged a monthly fee because we opted in to online only statements, if I recall correctly. Or maybe automatic replenishment. In any case, we don’t pay a monthly fee.

We have four cars that each have a transponder. Ours are Massachusetts issued, and we don’t have a monthly fee.

They match up the license plate to your EZ Pass account. Like others, we don’t Velcro ours on and take it from one vehicle to another. Sometimes I’m in a car without it and just drive through the toll. Never receive a bill or fine because they are matching the license plate to the account. They assume it was an error in not reading the transponder.

And, yes, it does vary from state to state. My state doesn’t charge a monthly fee and actually gives a nice discount on tolls for using EZ Pass.

Our S has an EZ Pass for VA. He doesn’t have his mounted and just puts it on the dashboard when he wants to be able to have it used. He’s not tried it in the glovebox, but perhaps that might work as well. So far, we’ve never opted to buy an EZ Pass nor a fastpass (for CA). The few times we pass a place the has a toll, they generally allow us to pay cash or credit card and for Golden Gate in CA, you can call in your CC before or after you go and owe the toll (within a set time window). We go on toll places infrequently enough that we’ve never thought of purchasing anything.

Have never activated the toll things mounted to windshields of rental cars (the last Budget car we rented this month didn’t have one mounted to the windshield). I’ve considered the “convenience” offered by rental car companies of using their toll payment a huge ripoff that greatly increases the price of our rental cars. Of course, YMMV.

We have three ez pass transponders- one for each car. I live in PA and we don’t pay a monthly fee. Money is withdrawn when the balance on the account is down to a certain amount. We’ve had them for more than a decade. It never occurred to me that we couldn’t use them with a rental car and I’m trying to think if we have.

@himom and others…

There are states now that are no longer accepting cash for tolls. In fact, they have removed their toll booths and have the overhead readers you can drive under without stopping.

Massachusetts is no cash, and NY State is in the process of removing their toll booths. If i were a betting woman, I’d say other states will follow.

In these states, it’s either easy pass, or they send a bill to the address connected to the credit card. So if you had a rental car, the bill would be sent to the rental car co. And you would surely get a bill…with fees.

Ok. Will keep the in mind. Maybe one day we will have to consider buying one of those devices.

I’m not in Massachusetts but drive through the state turnpike a few times a year. Before I got my transponder they’d just mail me a paper invoice based on registration address. It was a no-brainer.

Hardest pay-after-the-fact situation I ever ran into was for the Chicago area. Their system, as I recall, asks me for the route I took. Except I don’t remember, or the names and highway numbers they use online don’t reconcile with my memory of the trip. Definitely operator error, but I was hunting desperately for a “pay maximum amount possible” button just to get it done!

We use a NY issued EZ pass just for rental cars. Never registered a license plate and had never have a problem in over 10 years.
Texas is a problem because it has its unique transponder and no manned booths, no cash. We went through one toll road but never received a bill from Avis.
