so far its been 50/50, some are very satisfied and some are very dissatisfied… i really hope i get good financial aid because i really really need it… please…::crosses my fingers::

I’m really satisfied… I was afraid they would be like UVM and give me a crapload of loans and a 2000 dollar scholarship, but they were very generous and now it looks as if I can go! Anyone know anything about how tasking work study is? I’m supposed to do about 900 dollars worth of it per semester

I would be unhappy if I weren’t bringing enough money in scholarships with me to clear me workstudy and loans each year.

So, all I have to worry about is my parents being angry over their EFC.

LOL! I remember last year I said, “I won’t have any trouble getting into the big schools, it’s the scholarships I need to worry about”

Thank God Duke took pity on my and let me in, unlike the other prestigious academies. Now I have a place to spend all my extra scholarship money that I didn’t actually have much trouble getting.

i didnt qualify for FA lol… oh well… kinda expecting it

I’m in the same position… EFC of 38500? Even though - somehow - it is the most generous offer I’ve received (need-based wise), it’s still way above (nearly double) the mark my parents told me they could pay. This really sucks. Farwewell, Duke.

:(

Farewell Duke for me also.

What makes me somewhat angry was that the FAFSA EFC is only calculated based upon your custodial parent (in cases like mine where the parents are divorced) but the Duke FAO calculates it based off of FAFSA and CSS/Profile Non Custodial Parent Form thereby almost tripling my EFC. That seems absolutely ridiculous when you have a noncustodial parent that doesn’t feel “Obligated” to pay for college and that I haven’t lived with for 8 years, but yet my custodial parent has to pay three times what the Government said they would.

So University of South Carolina Honors, here I come. Full scholarship, free laptop, $5000 a year stipend, $3000 a year research grant, $5000 a year study abroad. You CAN’T beat that and that is a fact. lol

I just keep telling myself that it doesn’t matter where you go, it is all about what you make of it, and I plan on making the best out of it and being a Gamecock next year!

I emailed my FA counselour and got two responses explaining why my package was how it was and then telling me to write a letter with specific numbers explaining my situation and she would be glad to reevaluate the situation, so I plan on writing a pretty detailed letter tommorow in hopes that I can eliminate some of this Family Contribution. I mean my student contribution is 6 times the monetary value of the assets that I have so maybe they’ll reevaluate some stuff.
Who knows…
Anyone ever had any luck with this?

I got a bad package also but I guess it should be manageable. I have some outside scholarships that can help me a bit too. I’m just hoping that, if I go to Duke, I’ll be able to get a good enough job after graduation to make enough money to pay the loans back quickly.
Yeah, and has anyone had any success with a financial aid appeal before?

I think duke is pretty understanding with financial aid and is willing to appeal the award decision

I sure do hope so!!
Good luck to all other appealees.

My D’s FA package came from Harvard. It beats Dukes Contribution comparison by 3k, and H has only 600 in WS/loans while Duke has 3.8k WS/loans. Who would have thought you could save money by attending Harvard.

very happy. columbia gave me 5k, duke just offered about 18k. appealing columbia…
