Facebook abuse

I finally found a way to let him get messages only from his “friends” (it was for some reason difficult to find - I guess FB is trying to make everyone more “social” by hiding various privacy settings…) I hope this will finally solve the problem.

Yes, change your FB so that you cannot get messages from those you are not friends with.

However, there is a virus that a friend can get that will send out these messages. That you can do little about except tell the friend. The friend has to change their FB password and run a scan with their virus protection software.

Tangentially related question-
There is a thing I just saw on fb called “Small Business Saturday”. It claims if you “like” it, American Express will make a donation to certain small businesses. It also provides a place to register an Am Ex card to get a $25 credit of you shop at a small business on Sat Nov 27. Needless to say I am not comfortable registering my credit card information. It looks like a legit promotion and seems to be on the Am Ex website ant FB pg, but still… I am very skeptical. Anyone familiar with this promotion?

sunnyflorida, how can you tell which FB friend has the virus that’s causing the porn messages to be sent? I just got another one yesterday and I made the privacy settings switch so that I will only get messages from friends.

You may have a virus. You need to make sure your anti-virus software is updated and then run a compete scan. Once that is done. Download Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Both of these are free anti-malware programs. Download each one, manually update them and then run complete scans, one at a time, with each one. Hopefully that will clean up your computer.

There was an article in the NYT about this yesterday. Ironically it is a worm called ‘Koobface’.

Koobface Worm Sharpens Facebook

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/15/technology/15worm.html?_r=1&ref=technology

I am not sure this is the same thing - the porn messages are not coming from friends, they are supposedly sent by the “girls”…

I have to admit that I am tempted to close the account after reading this article. And I will never click on any videos recommended on a FB page.

So what does this Koobface virus actually do to one’s computer? (Don’t think I’ll update my Flash player ever again…)

From Microsoft web site;

Koobface is a multi-component family of malware used to compromise machines and direct them in various ways at the attacker’s will. This could include using the affected machine to distribute additional malware, generate ‘pay per click’ advertising revenue, steal sensitive data, break captchas, and subvert the affected user’s online experience. Its components are varied, but include a worm that spreads by utilizing social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

why don’t they just leave us alone ? I just want to communicate with old friends and family…not look at top-less girls that could be my daughters :(
