Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

I’m assuming classic means not remodeled (old). :smiley:

Got my housing! I really wanted a deluxe for socializing reasons!

Reiber Vista Plaza
Double with shared bathroom

Anyone know anything about this hall?
Positives and negatives?

Hope everyone is happy :slight_smile:
Also, can we request a change without it being a hassle?

Thanks candles & lindy, good to know. Man, the TA thing bums me out. Just more kids who think they know everything I have to deal with. Oh well. So most of my classes have discussions attached, I assume that’s the TA’s territory where he gets to be the alpha? I assume attending these discussions to get on his good side is a bonus? Thanks guys.

@fullload
Often times attendance at discussions are mandatory. And most of my classes attendance of discussion is worth 10% of your total grade. And some classes they don’t track it, but in most classes they do. In most cases you want to go to discussion. It’s the opportunity you really have to get a better understanding of the material. Regardless of what you think you already know, there’s always more to learn. Plus during discussion, the TA will help you understand what they Think is important about the material. This is important because they are the one to grade the exams and the paper. So what they think matters.

Got it, thanks. I’m fully prepared to learn more and be open to everything, I was just taken back a little when I found out so much of my grades hinge on what these young students think. I just spent a long time researching professors and one of the main reasons I chose UCLA was for the English professors, not their TA’s. Oh well, I’ll be ok. :slight_smile:

Hey question how old is everyone here who’s transferring? Im 21 and I feel like I know a lot of 19 year olds going into their junior year, but I think some of you are older? Just wondering :slight_smile:

I enrolled in orientation date 202 because traffic should be better on friday rather than monday.

I just got into the first orientation date, the double one. Hope it gives me an edge on classes

I got the first orientation! I thought the server was going to crash or something.

I was expecting the server to crash too! Glad we all got through!

What sucks is those orientation dates and times fall right in middle of summer classes. Wish there were more options.

@fullload, just so you know, the times when you’ll get full-on professor time and when he usually grades are the seminars, which are about 25 students. But even then, I guess he could farm out the papers. The UCs are all about publish or perish, so the profs have varying degrees of involvement with the mundane aspects of homework.

How cool! Yay for 201 session! Where do we pay though I cant find a place to on MyUCLA its going to be more because were overnighting right?

Thanks, Lindy. My bread and butter has always been my essays. That’s where I nail my grades, so it was just lame to discover the profs will rarely read them. Again, I’ll survive. :wink:

@fullload I agree. It’s a drag. It was a drag when I was 20. :smiley:

Having said this, a lot of profs (in fact, most) are super-approachable. You can get to know them pretty well (and vice versa) by going to office hours.

If you have a chance and he’s teaching while you’re there, check out a course with Peter Sellars. Now he’ll read your essays! I would kill to take a course with him. Read his student reviews. :slight_smile:

I’m so worried about the orientation and the chance of getting classes. I’m an international student so I can’t attend any of the dates over the summer :frowning:

@Manda001 if your major is in Letters & Science you don’t HAVE to attend orientation.Just let them know so that you have the opportunity to register for classes

I got session 202 on July 17th noooooo

@luckie1367 Really?! I didn’t know that! I’m a comm major, should I just email them and let them know? Thanks!
