Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

@fncrane maybe, we’ll see! Hoping to get into a 170A class. Regardless, since we’re both gonna be taking UD math courses from here on out it’s likely some of our classes will align at one point or another. So see you this fall/some indeterminate future?!

@Bearly definitely!! :slight_smile:

@anikom15 I agree, I’d never advocate for getting a minor instead of relevant ECs, I was just trying to convey my thought process behind differentiating myself with a minor

Overall, I was completely exhausted from orientation. Make sure you try and eat and drink lots of water. I had fun in my group and met some cool people.
After you have your one on one appointment with your NSA, make sure you come up with the schedule that fits your needs and like @luckie1367 HAVE alternates, and have alternate discussions. For example, check the restrictions on certain classes outside your major (you can find this on the registrar website), some are only restricted to Sociology majors, etc. Also check if the final exams fall on the same dates. My NSA didn’t allow us to register in classes that had the same final exam dates.
If you’re a Politcal Science major, and finished all your lower division requirements, after your department meeting, go ahead and speak to someone about going from Pre-Political Science to a Politcial Science major. It takes only 2 minutes.
Also, if you finished all lower division requirements as a Politcal Science major, your NSA will probably recommend you take one Politcal Science course and two electives.

Someone in my group was double majoring and was completely unprepared when it came to his classes. The enrollment process should take less than ten minutes and he was scrambling trying to find classes for 30-40 minutes

For people who went to the orientation, would you say its ok to skip orientation and get the classes yourself? The only downside I know from not going is you get last priority.

Literally all of the classes you need or want will be full if you wait that long.

I also didn’t understand what the big deal was about not having finals on the same day??? I have had this happen almost every quarter, it’s not a problem and it’s nice to knock a few out on the same day. Unless say you have two like physics finals, then I see the issue.

Yeah, usually you are allowed to have finals the same day.

@LegioLatius I strongly suggest going to orientation because you’ll get a department meeting with the heads of your major. They’ll explain how everything goes within your major and it’s helpful. Also, you’ll be able to get one on one meetings with your NSA to make sure you’re on the right track.

And you’ll be able to meet some of your new classmates!

Anybody else’s provisional award letter not available, still?

And I really enjoyed orientation. The campus was amazing (haven’t been there before) and my NSA was awesome. Had no problems with my group, everyone was cool. Because I had finished literally all pre-reqs at my CC, I had no problem enrolling in classes.

Bought myself a shirt.

Who went for an early arrival? No the pre-session. How was your experience

@shaneLer yeah, I got mine like 3 weeks ago.

Try going to MyUCLA -> Finances and Jobs -> Awards and Notices (and make sure you’re looking at Fall and not Summer)

Yeah, it says documents received and my file is pending review. I have two days to accept my housing offer, so I got to give FA a call today and see what’s up. Thanks!

@shaneLer oh, were you accepted from the waitlist? Then it might take a bit longer.

@luckie1367 Yup. I just gave them a call, they informed me I should get it by the end of the month, and if not then to call them again. I just gotta hope it’s going to be similar to what I expect!

My worry is that I won’t be informed by July 28, which is when my initial payment is due. If I pay that, then find out that I won’t be receiving aid and have to cancel my housing contract, will I be out hundreds of dollars? I don’t expect this to happen, but it still worries me.

Having finals on the same day is a bigger issue at UCLA than at CCC. At UCLA, a final could potentially be 100% of your grade. As someone taking a summer class where my final can be 85% of my grade (if it’s a better score than my midterm), I will tell you that that is a great deal of pressure.

Of course, I didn’t have a choice and I have two finals on one day, but if you can avoid it, please do.

85% of your grade? Hmmm. Stop the insanity.

I too thought “what’s the big deal about 2 finals in 1 day?” I did it twice, each time my first final was fine, but I was completely drained by the 2nd one. The first time I didn’t know I’d have a problem, and the grade on my 2nd final really suffered. Fortunately the 2nd final wasn’t worth too much, and I already had a solid grade, the 2nd time I knew what I was getting into, so I just mentally prepared, and it worked out some better, but still not great. It was just unavoidable.

@luckie1367 so i thought i answered about the USHIP but here it is again. “USHIP Grant is awarded to applicants who filed the FAFSA/Dream Act Application by the March 2 priority deadline. This grant is used to cover USHIP (University Health Insurance Fees). The amount of USHIP Grant for 2015-16 is $2,229.”

i found it on this website: http://www.financialaid.ucla.edu/Prospective-Student/What-Aid-is-Available#9768365-uship
