Is anyone having problems with their last semester in community college? I am Santa Monica College student, got admission from UCLA with Linguistics major.
I am currently taking Geology 4 w/ lab, and Sociology 4. Geol is going well but this Socio class is killing me. Although this class has nothing to do with my major and IGETC, I am going to get a D or so.
Anyone dropped a class like this one and still continued their admission? Please share with me if you have experience like this! The drop deadline is 05.15.16 and I am just so worried that if I have to drop this and leave W, or just get a D and report them.
Does anyone know how long it takes for the Residence for Tuition Classification to be approved?
I’m nervous about it because my mother is undocumented and I think I might be dq as a California resident despite the fact I was born in this state and have graduated high school here and living in it since I was born.
Not fair to dq someone because of their parent.
Hi @nomee08, I dropped with a W one of the classes I was taking. I emailed the UC App and UCLA and was told by the later if they needed any further info they would contact. I ended up still getting accepted! I suggest contacting UCLA asap, since the W deadline is approaching and you are going to hit a weekend and it took a few days to respond. If you do end up dropping you must contact them through the submissions online regardless.
@nomee08 hey i also go to SMC (got into ucla as a soc major) and im taking soc 4 too! Are you in professor livings class by any chance?
@2016Candles - Reading your post made me very happy. I’ll be around the same age when I graduate. I’m so excited to start my UCLA journey and I’m pleased to hear there is a network of non-trad students as well
@selimpride - I sent my documents in last Wednesday and yesterday I got approved as a resident. So it definitely doesn’t take long at all!
I read this on their site so I think you’re good: “Any student who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. (minor or adult), whose parent is undocumented, or out of status, but has otherwise been physically present in California with concurrent intent to remain in California for 366 days, will be eligible for a resident classification.”
@Edirol
but has otherwise been physically present in California with concurrent intent to remain in California for 366 days, will be eligible for a resident classification."
Do they mean me or my parent?
I classified my mother as a non California resident due to being an undocumented.
Am I screwed?
And that’s sucks it took you that long to find out, damn I’m freaking out. I’m a freaking California resident, I have lived in this state all my life.
@Smj8542
Haha in fact, yes. I am a linguistics major but I just choose this class as an elective course. Socio 1 and 2 for IGETC was nice but prof. Livings is just terrible for me :). She always makes us to form groups to avoid teaching. Anyways this class has nothing to do with my IGECT and major so I guess I will have to drop this course before it gets out of control. Congratulations on your admission and good luck!
@tigerbuns … I read on their summer guide for financial aid that applications submitted by incoming transfer students would be considered on time regardless of the April 31st deadline. Im just hoping to hear back as soon as possible to know how much money I will need. If you dont mind me asking … Was your summer aid package generous ??
What are you guys most looking forward to on Bruin Day this Saturday ??
@Edirol did you get the email about the returning students(old people) scholarship? I’m debating applying for it, but I’m not overly involved at my CC so I’m not sure I’d get a decent letter of rec. I basically just take care of business and head out.
There have been a good amount of courses where the professors have complimented me on the quality of my work, but I dunno. I guess I feel like they have so many students that they might not have a clear memory of me at this point.
@Oldhopeful You should do it! I don’t qualify since my gap year occurred between first enrolling in a CC from HS, and definitely wasn’t 5 years.
@Cayton
Thanks! That means a lot. It feels like only a little while ago that were anxiously awaiting to start UCLA. Congrats to you and good luck in everything you do! Bruins for life!
@kamiture Yea, I think I might. I’ve already been writing the personal statement in my head. If only longer gaps meant better odds, because I blow that five year minimum out of the water, haha.
I know I definitely would have trouble fulfilling the renewal requirements, since I’m looking at doing 12 units my first quarter. I’ll be commuting a ways and, like an old man into a warm bath, I want to ease into the quarter system.
That money would definitely help for the upcoming year. Does anyone know how that works with financial aid though? Is it in addition to? Or do they just lessen that amount from your grants and slide that in there?
Has anyone not received their acceptance letter in the mail yet??? I feel like i’m the only one.
Also, for the housing application, I’m getting an error message…any help?
@Panorama14
Unfortunately, they didn’t give me any info on that. I have no clue when they will but I’m in the same boat as you.
So, I have decided to attend UCLA. I was between UCLA and UCI until just this morning.
I had a strange thing occur though.
I SIR’d previously to UCI, but formally declined it today. I then went to SIR at UCLA and did so successfully, but they did not require the $100 SIR fee. I’m not sure if I did something wrong. The homepage on MyUCLA says: You have accepted your offer of admission. Welcome to UCLA!
@xenoplanet that happened to me too. I SIR’d right away after being admitted and was prepared to pay the fee but it said that the fee was not required. Pretty cool but it probably got waived.
@Panorama14 to apply for summer financial aid, did you have to figure out what sessions and what classes you were going to take beforehand? I’m not sure if I’m going to do the summer sessions, but I know that if i do, financial aid will be needed.
Anywho… Today I went to the Bruins transfer day. The experience was definitely awesome and all, but I do have some complaints. I drove 6-7 hours for it. The majority of the people who are getting paid to do the tours, answer questions, direct you to places, etc., are freshman and sophomores… Most of them have no clue about the transfer process. Also, when you go to the tables for the major you are in or interested in, none of the people who are answering your questions are even in that major! Or again, are freshmen or sophomores who aren’t even focusing on upper division classes and are still doing GE stuff… Anywho, Berkeley it is. UCLA is for people who couldn’t get into Berkeley.
