My daughter was very sad to hear a “no” this morning, despite all her hard work on the application, 4.45 GPA, eight APs, going on the Hillsdale high school trip to England and France, etc. it’s a tough admissions year as students are fleeing for a more sane and rigorous academic experience. Congrats to all who are accepted!
wow! I guess Hillsdale really is a reach for everyone. Did she submit test scores?
Mama2fourplusone I am so sorry. Your stats sound like my daughters but we are in next batch because of SAT scores not submitting in time. Did they give a hard no or do you get to be deferred or waitlisted? I’d love it if you’d share some more stats ….my daughter is going crazy waiting. We also did a summer trip and was hoping that would be a big help. She loved it!
Daughter accepted with some scholarship money…but we can’t get into portal. We did not get a phone call, but got an email from the person she interviewed with, that she should check her email!
4.0/4.52, CA public hybrid school, 1410 SAT , 5 APs, many honors classes, 30 hours college course work with all A’s, strong debate team record and senior year on a CC team, judges debate tournaments, theater performances for 3/4 years, year long internship at a history museum, worked all four years of high school, good volunteer hours, founder and president of an active political club, ASB, high leadership, and many other activities. She went on summer Hillsdale program to England summer before Junior year.
Does Hillsdale have admitted students days?
My son was also admitted and had trouble getting into the portal. Turns out it was a known issue for the students who had been on a previous summer trip (my son went on the Winston Churchill trip summer of 22). They were considered “withdrawn” in the portal system so their logins weren’t working. My son’s has been fixed now, so hopefully your daughter’s has, too. Congratulations!
My son was deferred.
Was anyone else invited to the Washington DC statesmanship weekend? My daughter is going but I don’t really understand what it is.
Is this a product of the small enrollment? I never realized the admissions standards were so high.
He received an offer of admission!
Congrats to your son! Can you share more info about your son so that others interested in Hillsdale can help gauge themselves in the future?
Fantastic. Congratulations!
Not asking for details… but I’m curious if schools like Hillsdale that don’t use the FAFSA are sending financial aid letters rather than waiting for FAFSA to drop. Seems like they’d have no reason to wait.
Hillsdale uses their own system and indicate they make need-based offers two week after submission of that data. So far, my son’s file indicates it’s still in progress.
My son’s acceptance proves that Hillsdale really is using a comprehensive admissions process. He had very strong essays and recommendations letters. However, his GPA and tests scores were on the lower end of Hillsdale’s averages. He said his interview (which he did in person) was only so so. That being said, he is a mission fit since he attends a challenging classical liberal arts high school and is interested in going into classical education. Hillsdale offers a minor in classical liberal arts education which is pretty uncommon.
We received the financial aid offer earlier this week.I suspected they had not accounted for the fact that my other child will also be in college next year so I called the financial aid advisor. She was fantastic and confirmed I was right. We submitted some documentation and halved our EFC!
My D25 has her interview next week. Any tips for her?
I’m also curious about majoring in education at Hillsdale. Anyone know how that major works there?
My son will be turning down his spot at Hillsdale (with a substantial merit aid package) so hopefully that frees up a spot for someone on the waitlist (and money too). Hang in there!
Always been curious about how Hillsdale aid stacks up. Did you get similar aid packages at schools that use FAFSA and/or CSS? Was that the determining factor?
No it wasn’t the determining factor but it was one factor of many. My son has a 4year ROTC scholarship and the school he is committing to is also giving him 4 years of free room and board.
Some of the deciding factors were:
ROTC
size of school
Campus beauty/architecture (it’s important to him even tho it seems superficial).
Finance major outcomes
Hillsdale offered a $25.5k renewable scholarship but the other school’s offer was too good to turn down (esp for a FINANCE guy, lol).
We do not qualify for any need based aid so we were not offered any other scholarship to other schools except McGill but it was only like 3 or 5k. So it seems like Hillsdale truly is MERIT based aid because we could have done full pay based on our incomes.
