I recommend using painters tape to map out a rug on the floor and see how you like the area it covers. I was recently sure that I needed a 9 x 12 for an area, but upon measuring with tape realized that an 8 x 10 would actually be a better fit/balance.
Color wise I feel like you have to do you! For me, with “brown” floors and “brown” furniture I’d have to bring in some color - even orange feels like in the brown family. I think as long as you don’t do like bright blue or bright pink or something like that you can find a rug that has some brown or beige or camel color along with a warm blue, red, or otherwise.
A Persian rug design might be a good option. Multi color/pattern to be able to ground the room. They come in all colors, depending on your budget the sky is the limit.
I agree with you. I had decided that a 9x12 was needed, but then was rethinking that when we thought of a different placement for the couches. He’s done with the floor now - so this weekend, we’ll try placing the couches/tvs like we want them and see what size we need.
@momofboiler1 - yes, I need to have a plan for the whole room, even if we are not painting it just yet. The thought of picking out a paint color just paralyzes me
It’s interesting though to see how big the room feels without all the furniture and stuff we had accumulated in that room over the years. This is giving me an opportunity to reset the room and hopefully get rid of a lot of stuff.
Do we have a generic home remodel thread (I know there was a old one). As part of this, we also got our entryway floors changed to hardwood. Now, that’s one more space I am trying to redo What do you have in your entryway? A mirror, a hallway tree?
We had a small display cabinet with some souvenirs we had from our travels. I am thinking we should have a nice mirror/artwork/photograph on that wall instead now.
Our entryway is relatively small. I wanted something to put a few pictures on. It was hard to find something that fit the space, and I finally found an inexpensive console with three shelves. I figured that if I found something I liked better, I would switch it out. I still have it there more than 10 years later. I enjoy putting out family pictures for various holidays. I have a picture hanging above it that is both beautiful and meaningful (created by a former student). The console and picture never fail to bring a smile to my face when I walk through the door. For me, that’s the vibe I want.
We have a large entryway space that has the main staircase (that bends to the upstairs floor) and also opens to the dining room, living room, den, and also a smaller hallway with the other set of stairs.
So we have an upright piano in ours! It’s against the stairs. And a small table where we put the daily mail. And a nice antique looking coat rack.
We have a beautiful piano bench with a cross stitch cover to sit on and take off or put on shoes, and a small corner table with one drawer that holds car keys.
Not very big. And yes, stairway is in the same area (typical New England Colonial design). We don’t tend to use the front door too much. A bench or stool to sit and put shoes on might be a good idea - will have to measure the space.
Put the couches back in the family room and my wonderful idea of rearranging the room is probably not going to work out I was putting the TV/stand in one corner on the diagonal and the couches across from that corner in a L shape - but both couches have recliners and need additional space between them to open the recliners. Any rug I get now for that space will have to be smaller (no furniture legs on the rug) or include the TV stand. Argh. Back to the drawing board.
I’d like the front legs of the couches to be on the rug. But the problem for me is that with the tv stand in the corner, the rug will end up under one leg of the tv stand, given the couch positions. That feels awkward. The other choice will be to go with all the legs on the rug which in this case is a very big, atypical size. @thumper1 - do you have a picture you can share?
I’d try the diagonal rug placement in your space and see how it works. We have done that in two rooms (our FR and our LR) when we put the furniture in the diagonal. It worked well on our space.
